N West potholes

Avoid these roads if you can. Your life may depend on it.

otchefstroom - There are officially 5 648 potholes in the North-West's Dr Kenneth Kaunda district - and 2 500 of these are on the road between Wolmaransstad and Schweizer-Reneke.

North-West's department of public works, roads and transport provided a survey of all the potholes in this district.

The district includes Potchefstroom, Klerksdorp, Ventersdorp, Wolmaransstad, Orkney and Leeudoringstad.

The 150 potholes between Potchefstroom and Vanderbijlpark are a nightmare for motorists. According to the survey, repair work is done on this road every day.

And between Klerksdorp and Ventersdorp motorists have to swerve to avoid 596 potholes.

The largest part of this road in the direction of Klerksdorp is monitored daily, according to the department, while the rest of the road is inspected by road workers every other day.

One road user described the condition of the roads he uses frequently as follows: "The road between Ottosdal and Hartbeesfontein is in its moer (ruined), the one between Vryburg and Schweizer-Reneke is a disaster and there are a few holes in the road between Schweizer and Delareyville."

According to the department, work is done on the road between Wolmaransstad and Schweizer-Reneke every day, but in places people rather drive on the gravel shoulder than on the road itself.

The roads department has spent its entire budget for 2009-2010 in less than six months.

The information about the Dr Kenneth Kaunda district does not include national roads such as the N12 and the N14 nor municipal streets

lol. Its funny but b4 u blame the anc jus remember : the anc has built alot of new stuff (roads,clinics,schools etc) while trying to support the poor - which no other government does except 4 cuba

On the bright side - hopefully some ANC convoy will go hurtling along that piece of road...
 
I'm trying to work out the point of that article.

At first I thought it was going to be a dig at the municipality for not doing anything about the condition of the roads but then it goes on to say that the road is inspected every other day and repaired almost daily. The article does not seem to draw any conclusion. What is the point? Are they insinuating that the road needs to be closed and totally re-layed or that more money needs to be thrown at that provinces road budget?
 
There is apparently only one road in my town that doesn`t have potholes.

They started building a road between lichtenburg and mafikeng, as well as lichtenburg and koster last year.. and then abruptly ended. Guess its because they spent their budget... so all the half-finished roads got ruined during the 2nd half of the year. They have started again just now... hopefully they will finish this time.

Gautengers should consider themselves lucky to have all that attention paid to their roads... large teams working day and night.

ps: there are four regions... so you can estimate the number to be around 20000

BTW and FWIW....I've done some traveling on our highways and byways and have to say that the piece of tar they call a road between Delmas - Kendal - Ogies is freaking shocking to say the least. That is probably the worst road I've tavelled on anywhere....I came back home and truly feel for the folks living there........
And on that note, Piet Retief....holy smokes....how bad can it be to travel through a town....that gag with the giraffe comes to mind...only with a hippo and a few crocks added...:cry:

Your mindset and mentality defies any reasonable logic! They are talking about inspections/work everyday, thats all they have left to do on some roads , the rest is left to go to waste!

I am sure the budget would have made it if it was not "Spend"....on what?

leaving the roads to be neglected for ages, and then trying to fix and build all the roads at the same time. Its actually good for a department to exhaust their budget... not good if its done so quickly though. At least that means the province should get a bigger budget starting April.
 
Haven't seen a pothole in the Western cape for a long time now.

I was up in Nam a while ago and their dirt roads are great to drive on, maybe we should convert out tar roads up there to dirt doads.
 
It is not so good though if the budget is spent on people "monitoring" and not on actually filling the holes with tar......but that is job creation I understand......:wtf:

I bought a bakkie in PE a few weeks ago....the good roads there surprised me too....maybe we should all move there and fark your roads up......:D

True. But then again those roads are also carrying much more traffic & therefore need more maintenance.

Not sure why our roads are better.
Did spend some time in mpumalanga last year and those roads are shocking.

Toll roads everywhere.

We only have 1 toll roads here at du Toits kloof and you don't have to use it.
The old pass is well maintained and scenic.

One word : TRUCKS :

Overloaded trucks and a warm day is goodbye to a road that wasn't built by a pro with an adequate budget.
