Beware the spinal trap & more

Yea but surely for some things chiropractors actually can help? Like back pain?

PeterCH... input?

I can't comment. I can however say that things such as physiotherapy (called physical therapy in the US) help - muscle strengthening, balance improvement, etc.

No I've never been to one. In fact I haven't seen a regular doctor in years either. I am a relatively healthy person so I don't really have a whole lot of healthcare issues.

Still the babies aside it seems logical to me that an issue stemming from muscle problems or slight skeletal misalignments could be sorted by someone that rearranges bones for a living.

'Well visits' for regular general checkups are advisable. It's like going to the dentist even if your teeth don't hurt. At the same time, the point of seeing the doctor when you're sick is to make sure that the thing you consider a common cold is not something more ominous.

Chiropractors think that by adjusting the misalignments they can thereby restore the nerve signals and cure health problems. This idea was first propounded in 1895 by D. D. Palmer, a grocer from Davenport, Iowa, and a vitalist who considered intelligent energy to be conveying information among various body parts. There is no scientific evidence to support these ideas. Palmer claimed that he cured a deaf man, Harvey Lillard who was a janitor by trade, by manipulating his spine. As Dr. Harriet Hall comments: "This makes no anatomical sense."

n short, chiropractic may be an unhealthy alternative for many people. The SkepDoc, Harriet Hall, writes: "One study [on chiropractic] found: 115 case reports included strokes (66), spinal fluid leak (5), spinal epidural hematoma (7), cauda equina syndrome (2), herniated disc (20), radiculopathy (7), myelopathy (3), diaphragmatic palsy (3) and pathologic fractures of vertebra (2)." See Adverse Effects of Chiropractic.

Take a skeptic read and find out for your self, or ask Sandra Nette

I take it that you never asked the quack, why he was doing this, and how it would help you. Maybe you did, but I will bet that you did not understand a single word that he babbled at you.

erm no.....sweety.

I am not saying that you are stupid, what I am saying is anything this con man may have said to you is utter nonsense and has not basis in fact or reality. Try it next time, you are with one, ask him to explain to you what he is doing, and question him about the things he talks about. He will make claims with no evidence to back them up, and if you push him on it, he will get upset.

Chiropractors are no more than useful than the local sangoma`s. Good on Simon for standing his ground against this dishonest science.

I'm quite interesting to find out what your personal beef is with chiropractors? I only ask because it definitely sounds like you have one.

And I also am not sure why someone would go to a chiropractor with any problem other than back ones. If they do they deserve what comes to them!

EDIT : Ah, my mistake. Not being one who has ever visited doctors my knowledge of what chiros actually do was limited. Seems they "specialise" in curing everything through spinal adjustments. My impression was that they help resolve back issues only.

lets see, I went to a doctor first, saw on the x-ray machine how one of my 'rug werwels (spinal vertebra's?) ' moved position, at the end of the day I would need to do an operation to slid it back in to position. Which has way more side affects than someone who knows how to move your back and push it correct. afterwords I got ex rays taken, the pain was gone and its back in its place although he warned me it would move again :)

anyways I would rather take medical advice from a professional doctor than some It person who saw a few videos and now claims to be an expert on the entire practice

Totally correct, go and find out for yourself, as you say, I am no expert in anything, but remember the chiro guy is looking after his own back pocket, so he will say positive things about his abilities. You need someone with an opposing view, like for example Sandra Nette

i go to a chiro quite often, not for sickness, but becuse i work a lot on the computer and am a tall person.

more often than not the headackes i get are tension or back related, i go the the guy he clicks me into position and i feel a lot better. i would rather go to a chiro to get the cause sorted out than pop painkillers for 3 days.

i am not saying they know everything but chiros are a registerd disipline, and you can go to varsity and get a Degree in it. further more many of the top varsitys overseas have it as a course as well.

Don't need to answer, but you not over weight are you? because large boned IT folk always seem to have that problem, and I doubt that it's the bending over machines that causes it. I should know, I am a fat puck IT type with back aches. So do Jim and save all the coin you spend on getting your back twisted and also prevent you ending up permanently on your back.

Im against any pseudoscience (Climate change denial, creationism, chiropractors, reflexology, feng shui all that crap). Glad you picked up where I had issues.

Im a tall bloke and in IT... got loads of friends who are tall and in IT... none of them have back problems.

also sceptical, although nothing feels better than clicking your back and neck :) maybe they're onto something

programer, so i sit for ever at a desk, the problem is you start sliding on your seat. i was recomended to sit on excerise ball, for 2 hours a day in front of the computer and it helps. Also a quick check if you have a sore neck, turn it from side to side, see how far you can get it. then go to a chiro and let him sort it out, then try to turn you head again, proof is in the pudding. I am not overweight, but i dont have a lot of muscle either. (typical geek ;))

its amazing the instant feeling / dizzyness you get, while you body readjusts to the correct possitions, within a few min you feel a lot better.

I can feel in my back when a vertabra is out of place, or my hip is not right.

My whole family swears by them, but some people also belive the earth is flat so, it up to yourself to decide.

BTW the back does not have to make a click sound, sometimes it can just be pushed back easly. i dont go to chiros for kindney stones but for genral posture issues i would go there before i pop spasmed.

I keep reading this thread title as 'Beware, this is spinal tap', and I think to myself... Spinal Tap was a good movie. What's to beware of?
