Power is what drives war, religion is just a side thing that people use. What is America's excuse to fight wars? Nuke's? Terrorism? Hmmm what else?
Nope, I never said that at all. There would be one reason less (and the largest reason) to go to war.

I don't disagree with that but you can't just ban religion like you can some guns, it's impossible.
agreed, religion in these cases is being used as a scapegoat, whilst the real driving force is usually financial/greed.
its not exactly fair to blame religion for this, rather blame men, because we always want more.

No religion, men would need to look for other reasons to kill each and while they doing that, I feel a common ground can be achieved. Pretending that religion is not a major factor in the worlds ills is childlike, and will harm you.
ur naive...if there was no religion to wage wars over it would be ethnicity, nationality or whatever differences we can find in our common humans.
Even when agreeing on religions, ppl still fight with each other. They just find different reasons..

This thread reminds me of the John Lennon song imagine which had the "no religion" part removed in the US lol.
is it that simple though? I agree religion was and on occasion still is used to control the masses, but i think ppl who claim religious affiliations are not that bound by them anymore. They might be more likely to be influenced by tv advertising/marketing than they are by religion..

I suggest that religion makes it oh so easy to justify anything, from raping your daughter, to stealing another countries resources. Now, I suggest try and use atheism to do this, it can not work, because atheism leads to accepting that all your actions are totally your responsibility. Anyone that does not apply to would be considered to be psychologically damaged.

and we are going in circles here, i think everyone concedes that religion is widely used in wars, and as a scapegoat for bad acts.
But... is it possible that the underlying cause has nothing to do with religion? like maybe pure lust or greed? in fact, i would say those are highly likely, and are being cloaked with "religious" intent.
So, ur blaming religion because it is being used as a scape goat...why not blame the actual causes....poverty, education, ignorance, stupidity, fear...
as with ur aetheism punt that it leads to accepting all ur actions are totally your own resposibility.... ur making aetheists out to seem some kind of awesome humans.
Think on this, take a guy who has no religious affiliation, he is running around doing bad things, in ur example he would be likely to blame religion because its easy? thus an aetheist wouldnt even stand up for what he believes in,he just finds a scape goat which happens to be the exact opposite of his views..
Off point though, i am not attacking aetheism, its ur choice. but dont make it out that all religious ppl dont hold themselves accountable and all aetheists walk on water (lil joke...)

I don't think we should be banning religion anyway.
I see it as the main rather than the exception but I do accept that man exceptions exist. Its not all bad, and its mostly people trying to do what they think is best in the only way they know how... even if they dont realize all the consequences.

I find it quite silly actually, I know of many, completely sane religious people who could never even think of doing this.
So could we really blame religious books or is it the interpretations thereof?
I though believe this type of action solely depends on the persons' mental capacity to think logically, which in this case shows that the father of these daughters was just plain stupid and only a fool would believe that a religious book could lead a man to this action when there are many people who believe in this same religious books and would never think of doing something so astrocious.
I think that anyone who is smart enough wouldn't believe this man trying to justify himself by using a reigious book, this was his sick actions that he controlled.
His just a pervert in my opinion.
