Controversial SA Blogger arrested

By Eleanor Momberg

The blogger-sphere was buzzing this week with claims that the South African police were clamping down on people critical of the government and crime.

This came after the arrest on Wednesday morning of Albert Oosthuizen who runs zasucks.com - a blog that has as its mission "to bring news to the outside world of the cr*p that has become of South Africa".

The confirmed arrest of the zasucks blogger and claimed arrest of two bloggers from the Boerevryheid website sparked fears of a renewed clampdown on rightwingers and rightwing groups critical of the government ahead of the 2010 World Cup.

I certainly do not support these guys

I DO however support the idea of freedom of expression , freedom of ideas and freedom of thought.

Something I am not so sure these idiots do.

They seem to like it a lot when the "Jackboot" is on their foot.

NOT so much when the "Jackboot" is on someone elses foot -- pressing down on THEIR neck.

There was a thread. It was speculated, by myself atleast, that this was a publicity stunt but it seems to not be the case. As per usual there isn't really enough information (coming from both sides) to actually say the arrests are related to the websites but it will hopefuly make these knuckledraggers a bit more cautious about sprewing hate speech.

But then it should count the same for all knuckledraggers:rolleyes: And I see quite a few people who are more praised for their hate speech than reprimanded;)

Freedom of speech

I find it very hard to believe that the rightwing afrikaners have any power whatsoever.

They are a minority within a minority and pose less of a threat to this country than one group of armed robbers.

All these people have left is their voice of discontent. They have the right to vocalise their marginilisation and disappointment with government and that state of government affairs.

By these actions, security forces are forcing the creation of an underground movement, making martyrs where there were none.

I find these arrests extremely distasteful, especially in light of the fact that the ANC has on numerous occasions blamed the media in South Africa for distorting facts, when in reality, the facts are correct.

The ANC detests the power of the media. It is easy to hide your inability to govern and your ability to loot from the uneducated masses, but much harder to hide it from the international and informed community.

I strongly condemn these arrests.

Furthermore I would like to assure the National Intelligence and security services, that you cannot silence the people. There are too many of us. We know our technology, we know how to use it and the media is our allie.

Maybe rpm should rethink his "allowed posts" policy in this light.

Quite a lot of people here (fudzy, smalltown, isede, etc) would simply love to see the less politically correct members on this site get arrested for their "hatred and racism".

According to the news, he was arrested on a warrant from 1993. Don't really such much more than that but isn't there a statuate of limitations? Although dunno what the origional warrant was for.

Well rpm has made it clear that racism shouldn't be tolerated on this forum. Given what happens to guys in jail I don't wish imprisonment on my worst enemies.

READ the Article

Fraudsters should be arrested, why would you condemn the arrest of someone for fraud? That doesn't make sense...

The Public Prosecutor declined to prosecute on a SIXTEEN year old Warrant

Thank G D for sane and sensible people that still adhere to not only the letter but also the spirit of the "Rule-of-LAW"

A salutory lesson

The big issue I have about that article is a lot of it is based on hearsay via the blog itself, not much investigative journalism there.

I did read the whole article! The Public Prosecutor didn't decline because it's sixteen years old, the article doesn't say that, it doesn't say why he declined it. But are you saying that they should leave him alone because the warrant is 16 years old? Fraud is fraud!!! And there's a lot of cases that are being re-looked at now, there's been some reported on recently like that school teacher who raped kids in Benoni or Boksburg...

The story seems to imply political motivation which doesn't make sense, and doesn't state how the author came to such a far out conclusion without considering the obvious one of a potential crime being committed and investigated...

I know the cops at Linden, there's NO WAY IN HELL that this was politically motivated...

I agree, if the criminal charges are valid, by all means arrest the fraudster, perhaps the whole affair has been given a fabricated political slant, I hope the truth surfaces.

Let me clear things up.

anc=NIA & SA Secret service.

Badmouth the one and the other will get(or try) you.

Arresting someone on a 16year old warrant....?

And guess who pays for this idiocy?:D

freedom of speech certified dead in SA ....

guys it is time to move your "freedom" out of the SA ...

or my be you should hide your IP irrespectively what you are doing, may be it will save your life.............

He was arrested on an unrelated charege, let out the next day. Says himself everyone was professional and respectful. What's the story here ?

Hmmm . . . You obviously fail to see the obvious. Never mind. My question is, does anyone know how much his layer asked the state to pay, for this hogwash? :D No wonder the policeman in South Africa are underpaid . . .
