Howsit guys, i am getting my copy of Ubuntu tomorow and i was wondering what software you recomend i download to make my experiance more pleasent:o
Sort of like a " must have " software list for ubuntu:D
As in like a codec pack maybe, that compiz fusion etc etc . . . To make it look and feel nice.

Also are there any good guides out there that you could recomend for tips etc? Like a complete PDF guide to ubuntu ? Lol:)
I am a newb and this will be my first linux encounter

As far as codecs are concerned, type this at the console...

sudo apt-get install ubuntu-restricted-extras

That should let you play anything that's actually used in the real world.

If you want to make it look nice, I recommend using the KDE ("Kubuntu") rather than the Gnome one that regular Ubuntu uses. If you're getting the DVD, then it will be on there. If you're just getting the regular Ubuntu CD, then search for "KDE" in the Synaptic package manager. Should be easy to find. Costs about 230mb in bandwidth, but you can use local-only.

This site is helpful.

^I second what he said, installing that should get you up and running nicely.

Consider getting: AWM (a mac OS X like dock)
Code:
sudo apt-get avant-window-manager
To get it to run at every startup. Prefs -> Sessions ->add
in the command field type:
Code:
avant-window-manager

Also dont forget to check out: http://www.getdeb.net/ for software you might want.

Compiz is installed by default. Get the Advanced Appearance Manager or whatever it is called to control compiz - very useful.

Also useful are the ubuntu forums: www.ubuntuforums.org

and: http://www.ubuntugeek.com/

sudo apt-get install k3b #if you want something decent to write cds/dvds with

sudo apt-get install amarok #best media player. nuff said.

It comes with the Ubuntu KDE package/Kubuntu.

Does it even work in Gnome? I know there's "Exaile" for Gnome, which is something of a copy.

Nice Zulu name that:D.

I haven't use KDE on Ubuntu (Kubuntu), but currently have the KDE version of Mandriva installed on my laptop.

It has a somewhat Windows-like appearance, so it might a bit easier to get around than a distro with the Gnome DE installed:).

That being said, my first experience of linux was with Ubuntu 6.06 (Gnome DE), and it wasn't too difficult to get around the OS:p

i've never come across any application that was desktop manager dependent. afaik that's not how linux rolls.
