Biggest ADSL downloader

When I had uncapped I got close to 300Gb one month. But it was very hard work. It left very little time to actually enjoy the fruits of my efforts.

The 1TB Man must have worked his butt off.

+- 100GB is just right.

On the contrary - he can be directly impacting my service - responsibility is separate issue. IS has a responsibility to ensure that all their users get the service they pay for.

Speculate all you like but I cant say for sure either way what the terms of service were for the account he was using but love him or hate him, he just just gave IS, and any other ISP, another excuse to implement little nasties like FUPs. :o

Using less than 20 gigs a month on business accounts. Very little IMO

I recall someone posting before the theory that if people all had uncapped accounts they wouldn't use that much bandwidth (say like a 30gig capped account user) because there wouldn't be that drive to try use up every last meg that you paid for. I think the quote above proves that dude's theory right.

If we all had either uncapped or a roll over cap at least you would be surprised how little most people would use.

I average only about 150gig a month but would like to give 1tb a go one of these days.

Seriously, this has to be a collection of people. There's no way that you could actually FIND 1TB worth of stuff to download from newsgroups. Besides that, how did he(they) manage to download uncapped at 4Mbps?

Edit: Actually, I know a few people who are IS network engineers... That's the only way you could have 4Mbps uncapped...

I think its also a bit of exageration on the isps side, too make a good story.

What? Should he have said "artificial line of measurement"? He meant they cross over the 50GB mark.
 
I also wonder what people do with that much data, say you download 300GB in a month and at least 250GB of that must be newgroup/P2P kind of stuff, i.e. you're storing it on your PC. The HDD space is costing you more than your internet connection after a while and anyone would run out of space in a few months (or 1 in my case :().

I'd run out of stuff I want to download very quickly, are all these guys so interested in the lastest crappy US series' that they have to have all of them, or tons of pr0n?

Might not apply to most of these uncapepd accouts, but just raping the newsserver 24/7, your life has to suck. :p
 
anybody who wants to ever compare hdspa or iburst with adsl again please first read this press release from IS.... would u get such a constant connection with a 3g carD? no. would u be ablt to even get remotely close to the having a connection at full speed the entire month? no. sorry but wireless still have a far way to go to compete with adsl....

and so much for who ever's theory that telkom adsl lines dont come close to 4mbps.... go look at what sites u people download before just blaming your adsl line. there many other factors causing slow speeds other than the actual line between u and telkom.

Honestly, all they have to do is rename their uncapped account to 50Gb account and everyone knows where they stand...
I personally don't believe the 1TB man is one of many, so it shouldn't be a problem...
Continue on with the uncapped name then, but don't be caught whinging about people using the limit of the line's capacity if it's being advertised as 'uncapped'
Crikey - this account costs over a grand a month... thats alot of dosh for virtual goodies....
 
It emerged that this subscriber had 40 concurrent active connections to newsgroups open at any given time – downloading data for the full duration of the month. The 1 TB monthly download amount came very close to the theoretical limit of what is possible on a 4 Mbps ADSL connection.

well he musta gotten alot of cached things.. still 40 threads??? even if he managed to get multiple logins at the old 5 thread max limit that would mean 8 connections and i think uncapped accounts are limited to one login max two if u get lucky ;) And then there is the Maxing of line connection which means it had to have been cached items .. but does the server actually hold 1TB or rather is there 1TB/30days =~ 33.3GB? per day changing? unless it was some uncapped things as well thus pushing the whole ratio along at line speed continually.. *think think* Still one wonders if the degradation in the service is due to this then..

Maybe he/they downloaded a lot of linux distros :D :D
 
besides the news server downloads, i think this user has clearly also made use of P2P and maybe also DC++.
