Biggest ADSL downloader

It emerged that this subscriber had 40 concurrent active connections to newsgroups open at any given time – downloading data for the full duration of the month. The 1 TB monthly download amount came very close to the theoretical limit of what is possible on a 4 Mbps ADSL connection.
It's twits like this that are stuffing it up for everyone else, and it's nothing to brag about either. How was it even possible for him to have 40 connections open on a single account? Personally I wouldn't normally mind, but capacity is limited and if these guys are impacting on our service then I hope that IS is taking some form of action against them.

well he musta gotten alot of cached things.. still 40 threads??? even if he managed to get multiple logins at the old 5 thread max limit that would mean 8 connections and i think uncapped accounts are limited to one login max two if u get lucky ;) And then there is the Maxing of line connection which means it had to have been cached items .. but does the server actually hold 1TB or rather is there 1TB/30days =~ 33.3GB? per day changing? unless it was some uncapped things as well thus pushing the whole ratio along at line speed continually.. *think think* Still one wonders if the degradation in the service is due to this then..
There are other news servers besides IS's.

i agree, but i don't think IS has any urgent bone in their body to sort this out. they are stuffing it up for everyone else. that ain't right.

Err no, he has been alotted 4mbit of BANDWIDTH,plz do your research before you reply, clearly you need to understand that he can't take up more than 4 mbit of the "pipe" purchased by IS.
You need a more solid understanding of networking before you run your mouth off because you're a mod. Really now, first you come off like you know more when you know little in reality.
On the contrary - he can be directly impacting my service - responsibility is separate issue. IS has a responsibility to ensure that all their users get the service they pay for.

Speculate all you like but I cant say for sure either way what the terms of service were for the account he was using but love him or hate him, he just just gave IS, and any other ISP, another excuse to implement little nasties like FUPs. :o

Agreed, could have been using international pay servers :)

For example, at the moment GigaNews are offering unlimited usage accounts with SSL and 20 simultaneous connections for $20 a month.

But Beta is right, it doesn't matter how many concurrent connections he had open, if he had 1000 (say) concurrent connections, his 4Mb of bandwidth would just be split equally over each connection, he wouldn't get more than 4Mb/s down.

that's right

Ermm if IS has a 155mbps capacity, and you have 30 of these guys clogging up the pipe 24/7, then the rest of us have to make do with sharing 35mbps. Granted that I'm estimating, but still, not a lot is it? Therefore a few of these guys can very well affect the service experienced by the rest of us. Perhaps you need to chill a bit, I have a feeling that your post was more of an excuse to try and attack the guy than to actually justify your reasoning.

The bandwidth and the number of connections are two separate issues. I've explained the bandwidth issue above. As for the number of connections, assuming he's using the IS one and despite the fact the he can only get 4mbps down, if the server supports a maximum of (say) 2000 connections, and a few of these guys are using 40 each, it doesn't leave many free for everybody else. The result - "unable to connect to ****.**.**.**"

Do they ensure the additional 4mbit capacity when they sign up an uncapped subscriber? I doubt it, and they don't count on the customers using the line 24/7 downling at full speed from a newsserver, that surely affects the network negatively.

Not that I know much about networking, but that is how I see it. I wouldn't think they allot a 4mb pipe to every customer, huge waste of money.

I get your point, but it's IS' job to upgrade this capacity if they see their network is being hammered by some individuals. I guess a warning to the guy is also in order..

It's incredibly expensive to purchase IPC capacity from Telkom. The cost would probably outweigh what they'd be able to recover, so it's not exactly feasible to increase their capacity each time somebody new starts hammering away. Well let's hope that Neotel (lol) can provide IS with some cheap and decent connectivity options.

Feel free to believe that ISs network can handle everyone using 100% of their bandwidth simultaneously and while we're at it lets ignore the whole notion of contention ratios.

So instead of an outburst why dont you enlighten me - how do things work?

Definitely, but I'm sure you've heard the horror stories of how long it takes to get an upgrade out of telkom.

I listened quite carefully to this presentation at the conference. Alan Bacher said that engineers investigating how this dude was downloading so much found 40 concurrent connections to a variety of international newservers. So clearly it was not just to the IS news server.

The number of threads or concurrent connections a user has does not impact on the congestion of a network. Only the total bandwidth used will do that. P2P apps and torrents can use thousands of concurrent connections on a single machine.

One chap downloading at 4mbps 24/7 is not, in itself, going to have any major impact on the IS network. But if hundreds or thousands do the same, the impact will be major.
