Biggest threat to game developers...

So let me get this right.. you guys are against the price reduction becasue you dont mind waiting for it to get cheaper three months or so down he line...
The reason why you dont want it cheaper is beacuse the dev will then be losing money or working at a loss...
so by you buying it for the sale price... is ok.... why?

something wrong with that picture?

Where the hell do you get that idea from? Nobody ever said we were worried about developers making a loss. Besides, sales are good for developers, they make more money selling 1000 games at $10 than they do selling 100 at $50.

I'm simply unwilling to pay R300 for a game, period. There are so many games that I barely have time to get to nowadays that there's no reason I absolutely have to buy a newly released game for such high prices right now. I can rather catch up on older games I haven't gotten to yet and play the newer stuff when they go on sale 3 months down the line.

Lots of people are willing to pay R400+ for newly released games, so let them.

Also, can we please stop using Steam prices as some kind of baseline for what new games apparently cost? Steam's prices are tied directly to the exchange rate. The games on sale at local retailers are not and cost a lot less. Steam's prices are not indicative of what games cost in South Africa.

In what way? You asked if we would be more willing to pay R300 for a new game, I said no because I can get it much cheaper not long after release.

So your logic says that they're making less money to start with and to make more money they should start lower down? Totally agree. Many more people will purchase a game new rather than pirate it or purchase it used, given the right price IMO.

My R300 amount wasn't absolute, it was an example. What are YOU willing to pay for games?

Lots more would be willing to pay R200. Those people very often buy second hand titles at no benefit to the devs.

So Assassins Creed, Black Flag for PC costs around R450 locally plus postage. Still expensive.

Because there are impatient people that will buy it full price. By starting the game off cheap the devs lose out on those people.

So then don't buy it now. No is forcing you to buy day 1. You can buy it next year for R150.

Look Chevron, I think we all know how the system is supposed to work. The trouble is that they jump up and down about people pirating software and I'm saying it needn't be such an issue lol.

Game could be R300..geez a few years ago they were but guess what...Piracy was still around because people would still rather buy a fake copy for R100 (PC) or R80 for console
If you can't afford the upkeep of a console (games and controllers) then don't buy one. If you can't afford to buy new PC parts every five years, get a new hobby.

So you think preaching to the public will help

It depends on the game.
All Call of duties, Assassin Creeds, Battlefields and Batman games I get at launch. COD I get 2 copies (myself and my son), the rest are for my son.
There is no other game worth the launch price IMO. I wait for a pre-owned copy or a really good special.

Over the year period between releases, I think I definitely get my moneys worth so okay with the price. R1k for CoD and I play it daily (3 hours each night - more on the weekend). Average about 1300 hours over the year period which works out to R1.30 per hour for my gaming pleasure. I'm good with that.

Yup, the logic fail is strong in this thread

How is the logic failed. If there are people that want to spend that much at launch for a game, let them. I think it has been established that the business model works. It is like that with sales in any aspect.

You put your product on sale for R 1000, only a few buy, you bring down the price, more buy.

I am agreeing that reduced price at launch will increase sales and reduce piracy and increase developer revenue.

It's the people who disagree with this view whose logic is failing.

No.

People who pirate will still pirate even if a new game was R50. Just out of principle.

I have to agree here. There are people that will pirate, because it is free, wether it is cheap or not. These are usually the ones that think "why pay if i can get it for free"

That holds some truth. When I used to pirate my games I would not even look at the price of a release. Would hop straight on the net and look for a copy.
Stopped pirating around 10 years ago. Now it's the opposite. I just look for the best price.

Saw torrent downloads on my firewall from my son's computer a few months ago. Found out it was a game he wanted. Have since blocked torrents on my network and gave him a lecture (he is only 9).
