No need to go extreme. After last weekend I stayed cleaned 'till yesterday - give the body a break and make sure you can get off just as a sanity check.

I drank SUPER BOCK non alcoholic or Woolworths low alcoholic beer 0.5% (they pulled it before the launch of Heineken non alcoholic) and the equivalent of a small lake of soda/sparkling water when I took a challenge to go cold turkey for 3 months in a row, it was hell for me.

I lasted 2 months and a few days then failed, it was a scorching long hot day and only after I had just chugged the first beer and was slowly sipping the second I realized what I had done. It did give me a better perspective and since then things have changed, moderation now means something to me (I still drink, just not as much and learnt to say no to myself and others).

I now also always keep about 4L of soda water in the fridge and will have about 1L of it when I get home, then see if I'm still thirsty (normally does the trick), I also take a 2L bottle of the stuff If I'm going to a braai.

If you make a mistake, don't go on a bender... Fark you will regret that when the SO or babbalas or both kick you in the head the next day.

All the best Moose.

My diamond diving neighbours got the weekend of to a stunning start, braai smoke swirling into the late afternoon skies with the sound thumping, party time was on.......

I held my course and watched Percy Jackson stealing lightning bolts with the lastbornmoose followed by a Cheetah side thumping the lads from north of the jukskei...

The old me would have been blitzed and would not recall nothing of the game...

As I lay here in my warm saturday morning bed, I feel like taking on the world, but shall settle for a lunchtime braai and ready my soda water for the test match.....

Don't miss the ale one iota......

O6h00, sunday morning...... this is getting weird.... just awoke after having one of those uber realistic dreams..... driving a sports car around an unknown town with three mates i do not know.... come to a really nice town and the three mates suggesting we stop for a beer.... next thing I know...we are in a pub with a tall 660ml draught sparkling in front of me......before i can take a sip i suddenly turn to my mates a say..." i cant drink this...i dont drink beer anymore...".. this cold turkey just transcended into my dreams......
Dream got weirder as i awoke due to being full mast after three mates and i went for a coke...whilst paying the aunty who was about late 50's she pushed her breasts against my hands .... next thing i know....in a back room in the cafe getting jiggy with the aunty...
Man! These sober hallucinations are gonna get me into trouble...

There is a medical explication for this of course, but let's go the Siener van Rensburg route and say he's having visions of the future. That way I get to have dibs on one of the unknown mates roles. And I need a road trip so badly

I was very much a binge drinker, with the Sunday afternoon braai with the Mrs, and the kids buzzing about. This usually ended around 7ish, when its a mad rush to feed+bath kids and the 8pm target never worked for us. Usually made it by 9, at which point i would pass out on the couch shortly thereafter. Mrs turned 40 in Jan, and for reflux reasons gave up the cigarette + the wine. I guess she was living in denial until the big 40 came knocking. I'm a year younger and chose to support her and have been pretty much Dry at home in cape town since. i did fall off the wagon once on a 3day business trip in April, but other than that I've remained dry. I did learn on that trip that the mid evening phone calls to the wife when shes sober and i wasn't so much - landed me in hot water, so didnt do that again after day 1. (I couldnt help that the work sessions were getting shorter each day, and the team building started earlier, or at least i chose to participate.)

Anyhoo - for me the positives - have lost some weight, feel healthier, and am a lot more "present" with the kids etc. Have had my eyes opened a few times when my 7 yr old has commented how she thought mom and dad were weird after they had wine or beer. Nothing like a reality check for me through the eyes of her.
So I've basically chosen to refrain from anything since - when i did drink i would go balls to the wall. Not so good with moderation and the sauce.

Going to the pub after work on a Friday isn't as much fun as it used to be, however im good with soda water / coke vs a pint. And i'm good to drive home after as well. And when i get home i dont make a beeline passed the family for my bed.

How do i keep my head OK? Have gotten back into my running, and have realised my recovery after long runs is way better than when i was 10-15yrs younger and getting blotto'd. Do i regret doing all of that? Not at all, but feel pretty good in my current state of being and its going to continue for me. Not sure how long, however i feel pretty good waking up refreshed 99% of the time without feeling like i need a nap :)

Tried the zero alcohol beers etc, and i simply drink them too fast, so not much point for me. So at braai's i typically stick to lime and soda or just soda. And if it gets too rowdy for me, i choose to leave.

It was bound to happen...... A local mate of mine who had also left the sauce around the same time I had ....appeared meekly in my fine office this morning....... This past weekend he had capitulated...... Ï had a few cold one's Moose...", he stammered before adding, Ï was gatvol of those lemon low alcohol Savanahs....

The Voice message came through about thirty minutes ago, It was from my neighbour's wife, "Moose, last weekend in August, keep your Schedule clear as it's The Dutchman's 50th and we are braaing a spit down at the club!!!"

I stood there with my cellular device in my oily hands (Coz I was cooking) and stared out the kitchen window at the neighbours house wondering why she did not just holler over yon fence....

Now, I have known this oke for thirty odd years and we were apprentices together on the mine at the end of the eighties...... This was going to be a big one....... You see the temptations start rolling in once you climb on that cart......

Tonight I am off to the Bowling club, invited four new members of the American Peace Corp for a braai, need to do my social responsibility and introduce them to some members of my community, But I shall be drinking bottled water....

The 50th, well i have time to mentally prepare myself..... ;)

Some time ago I decided to drink less, and I also had to not drink for a month or 2 at a time due to medical reasons. I found that mixing something, and drinking something you don't normally drink helps. I switched to passion fruit and soda, or cola tonic and soda.
My weakness was when booze was free, for example company socials. Now I can have my one or two, and then head home and still have a good evening at home, and a productive day the next.

I don't need to or want to go completely dry though. Just no drinking at home during the week, and keep relatively sober otherwise. Around drink 3 is a good time to stop if you can take an uber home.

With you on this. Done smoking and drinking as planned. Last month was my last. Going good now. Now I can fill my braai room fridge with more than just beers.

I reckon the solution lies in the mental rewards you give yourself. For example, being the go-to "DD" at gatherings can be a drag, but you can also pat yourself on the back for getting the folks home safely. We tend to under-estimate the subtle benefits to keeping those "blotto" occasions to a minimum. If we celebrate the sober times as much as we laugh and joke about the sozzled times, we'd probably feel more validated about drinking in moderation.
