Scientists at the MDI Biological Laboratory, in collaboration with scientists from the Buck Institute for Research on Aging in Novato, Calif., and Nanjing University in China, have identified synergistic cellular pathways for longevity that amplify lifespan fivefold in C. elegans, a nematode worm used as a model in aging research.

The increase in lifespan would be the equivalent of a human living for 400 or 500 years, according to one of the scientists.

The research draws on the discovery of two major pathways governing aging in C. elegans, which is a popular model in aging research because it shares many of its genes with humans and because its short lifespan of only three to four weeks allows scientists to quickly assess the effects of genetic and environmental interventions to extend healthy lifespan.

I've read studies like this for decades about various longevity discoveries, yet nothing really ever seems to come of them.
 
The mTOR and insulin pathways play a role in autophagy. Autophagy is also modulated in mice that eat less and live longer. So there is something about this research that can bring about interesting and meaningful.

It can be a double-edged sword since autophagy does play a protective role for cancer cells against many chemotherapy treatments.

Amazing that people would rather die than live more, assuming the extended life is healthy and you're able-bodied etc.

The world is already over populated, can you imagine if people lived for 300 years what chaos it would cause, the strain on our already fragile and dwindling resources
 
Sounds the law of diminishing returns will come in play here

Yes and No.. so assuming you live longer means appear to get older more slowly, then means you will be contributing to society or world for a hell of a lot longer. If you think about it, we lose a lot of experience via old age in the work force. Can you imagine those cvs and CTC

Women aren’t merely limited by age but number of eggs at birth which is finite. This means that if they were to live 5x longer.. it doesn’t mean their reproductive period will change.

But this does mean the current problems will persist ie world is not able to support everyone living at 1st world standards especially in a carbon producing world. So if the latter changes maybe.. food & water.. no problem. With productivity gains this could be good.. in an SA context, education system & post school learning for those who struggle now just means doing things slowly. I mean if you gonna live that long, education is key.
 
Hope this doesn't happen. Planet is over populated, as it is. Imagine a family that has like 10 generations of grannies, grand grannies, grand grand.....etc, etc, still alive

This is so ridiculous. Who wants to become f()cking 500-years old? If my doctor refuses to put me down at 60, I'll ask the vet.
