Hi Guys

So a friend and I will be going to Rietvlei Nature Reserve on Sunday Morning as the sun rises to try our hand at getting some nice shots of birds and probably other wildlife.

Can anybody here share some tips on the specific topic?

I'm going with my new 70-200 F2.8 and will rent a 2x TC to get a decent focal reach. Friend will also take his 150-500 Sigma along.

Thanks

LOL. Seeing as there is nothing sportswise going on here at the moment we thought we'll give something else a shot.

Luckily for me I've got a T20 tonight and the Southern Kings vs Cheetahs match tomorrow. :)

Dammit.

That was frustrating. It is quite difficult to keep those pesky small birds in the viewfinder.

Weather did not favour us this morning as it was mostly overcast and very windy. Birds were not active at all.

These are the best three shots I managed.

Thanks Apoc.

I'd be interested to see with the TC - if there is a real drop in quality or not

Been shopping again before the rand rolls gear up even more.
Not sure if this is the a good way to compare or not but here goes.
D800/Nikon 70-200 F4 with & without TC-20E -III.
Just cropped & resized for web,no other alterations.
Shot in Program mode to try keep the exposure similiar.
Used DX image area for both.
Its a cloudy,overcast day here.

TC 20 III, 1/160s / F8 / ISO160 / 400mm

Was a bit of wind on those palms so maybe not a great day for shooting them..
What you think? i don't see too much problem with the 2xTC, on my combo anyway.
I'm not sure if those palms are softer or the wind got them.

This is the original image with no TC & no cropping @ 200mm

I guess as the no TC image needed to be cropped in more its definitely sharper.

Look at the concrete wall above the table as well as the wall bottom right hand corner, there is a definite softening of the edges , but not that much.

Yep in between those 2 palms on the wall...

Is a pretty decent bit of tech that TC......I'm quite impressed...sure there is softness there but its still pretty respectable output.
Check this one out with the 2xTC on a bit of macro work - attached to a 105mm f2.8
No work done on this image
The 105 by itself would have nailed it better but its still not too shabby.

Nice.

Depending on the weather I am going to the Austin Roberts bird sanctuary tomorrow morning.

Today's quite nice too - but first I've got to pick up a 1.4 TC from [ xxxx's ] so will miss the good light . May run into you tomorrow .
