BitCo Consumer Review

Really amazed at the level of feedback (Positive vs Negative(Sorry Wikkels :P ) - Bitco seems to be looking at providing a level of service/internet which we need in RSA.

I am however a bit worried once they hit their target subscriber / Over subscriber ratio's - eg what will they do should links start performing slower than advertised. We have been "conditioned" to accepting that our ADSL service will almost never perform at the speeds they are sold at.

I am however optimistic at their easily understood Throttle plan, since it makes much more sense - no need to put traffic shapers in the path, just look at usage, and throttle for an hour should the usage be over a limit.

I would, however, like that bitco relaxes the policy for midnight surfers. Since the network is idle from lets say 12am to 7am, why not change the limit to only throttle after 3 to 4 hours of full speed during that period.

50% throttle is a very acceptable speed though, as many would confirm that a pure 2.5Mbps (max 5Mbps) link can handle 720p content from any provider.

That being said, a 24 month contract on any ISP provider is a big risk with the current growth in internet technologies (remember Afrihost pushing the ADSL market down to half price not so many years ago...). I understand a company needs to look at growth and a stable income, but if we as contract customers cant know that we will benefit from new speeds/technologies during the contract, we are stuck as well.

what the solution would be - eg keeping the customer happy - that i wont know.
My personal view is that i will prefer month to month , but the R4500 installation cost is crazy - especially since the hardware will be unusable with other ISP's ( not like an ADSL router which i can join any other network with). Can Bitco not have a buy back policy? eg 50% of the price after 6 months?

Clean unshaped internet with excellent customer service is the other side of the coin - which is also preferred. :)

Will definitely keep a subscription on this thread. Keep the feedback coming guys!

A solution could also be to pay the R 4 500 as an added item to your monthly month to month repayment till paid off. Thay being said though if I was a business owner I would not like to take that risk. We have some dodgy people living in SA :o. Maybe a solution would be to lesser the dent on the innitial setup in maybe taking the R 4 500 in 3 or 6 month payments with the first few months. Example: R 699 2Mbps line + R 1500 for the first 3 months.

Something to that effect.

Like I said, if it was my business I would not do it though. Not worth the risk. If someone is prepared to pay R 4 500.00 for the installation you know they will be clients and not just stay for a month or 2 and then have to go and remove the installation again at your company expense.

Sigh yes the dodgy people making our lives not so fun. Still a very high cost i think. considering that the router still belongs to them after the fact(thus we are paying for an antenna, wifi router and some cables + labour).

My problem being in a telkom-less complex, is that should i choose Bitco, it will be WISP number three. And yes - First WISP used Mikrotik +-R2k , next i installed less than a month ago Ubiquity Nano beam +- 2.5K, and now after poor performance i will need to shell out again on Bitco R4.5k just for hardware alone.

guess that is just how life sometimes goes :o

Is there someone that can give accurate stats on 24hours of downloading on a 5Mbps line? ( yes i am still on the linux distro stage :p)

Just got told they don't have LOS at my house :( Too many trees in my area.

I really hope they put more towers/sites up soon. I'm so sick of dealing with Telkom and was really looking forward to some real service and also some real broadband. Ah well, back to 3Mbps speeds...

If I can find something big enough and how to record it I can do it for you.

Wow, that sucks man...

The way they are currently doing business I won't be surpized if they do expand and an enormous rate. LOS is a real fear we all had to go through. I was lucky to have LOS though.

If your link from a provider is horrible you should be entitled to a refund or at least exit from the contract period with zero penalties. The Consumer Protection Act protects individuals in this way.

We wouldn't be happy if you downloaded 24/7 but if you download your distro during the night it is no problem.

Awesome:D Garth do you know which speeds you'll be testing? and which speeds you'll offer? as im looking for a speed of 15Mbps and up..

Our business fibre links are up to 100Mbps so technically we can do this for residential as well. It is a matter of finding the right financial model at the moment.

understood :)

I am just trying to compare achievable capacity with current services, and even my average usage pattern. Assuming im using NNTP, with a big backlog of data, will the following hold true :

first 2 hours : full line speed
hours 3 up to 24 : half line speed?

or will the throttling be lifted at different phases during the day?

My 2mbps Line review. Bitco enabled my line on monday early morning around 7:00AM, I was impressed that their engineers really reply to their customer queries as early as around 7 AM. Telkom, you have something to learn from Bitco. I'm constantly getting around 1.98mbps throughout the day. Managed to download some 8 GB of stuff and realised that I was throttled, stopped the downloads, waited around 45mins to a hour, I was back to normal speed again. Also got a phone call on Monday (later on) from Bitco, a lady called to confirm if my line is activated and working according to the speed I signed up for. Customer satisfaction survey, that is what I'm talking about. Garth, you should get all the ISP's together and teach them on Customer Service. Your team is awesome man. Forgot to mention, One of your Project managers if i'm right, Gerhard, came to my house personally to drop off the wifi router on friday because there was problem with the IP mix up or something. Words to describe the service... Awesome Awesome and Awesome.... Hopefully Bitco keeps the Customer Service as it is now in the future. :D

Hi All

My BitCo Review:
It’s been a week and all i can say is WOW! I concur with prasanv, the BitCo service is excellent. I also received a courtesy call from BitCo a few days later to find out if i am happy with my internet connection and their service. If BitCo continues with this business model, they will certainly be the number #1 internet provider in SA, i guarantee it!

Well done to BitCo!

My only gripe so far is waiting for the phonecall to arrange date and time for site survey..... :)

They have a lead time of 2 weeks from date of order. I recall that from the application I did. I was well aware of it and didn't bother me. But it is a long 2 weeks to know if you have LOS or not :o

So I'm not at home, but Bitco are out this morning :D

I'm 99% I have LOS as I have such a clear view of the tower. What if they say I don't? I can see it standing on my balcony (Kyalami Castle) :(
I'm sure there won't be a problem.. Otherwise it's back to slow, slow telkom... They said they could only give me a 384 :(
Quite disappointing.

But I have my fingers crossed.

Garth if the installation is successful, is it possible that the link could be handed over before the weekend?

Oliver

I hear you on the 2 weeks lead time but it should take 2 weeks to make the arrangements... ok ok its only been 2 days I have been waiting

My application to installation completion took 2 weeks. You would wait the same time or longer for a new ADSL installation, so not too stressed about that. My 5 Mbps service was handed over to me yesterday. Have to say that you can see a big difference in quality of service between a 10 Mbps ADSL and 5Mbps BitCo service. Netflix and Hulu worked like I've never seen before. Hulu couldn't be used on my ADSL line (kept buffering), but worked flawlessly on my BitCo service last night. Netflix is very responsive now. Netflix always worked on my ADSL line, but was not as responsive. On BitCo, I get full video quality within 15 seconds of starting a show now. So far, very happy with the service. Will give an update in a few weeks time.
