BitCo Consumer Review

Hey Guys

Wanted to share my experience

So after much hassle, i finally got my 5MB wireless solution activated late Tuesday evening so i had that night and yesterday to test it out

Off the bat the line ran well but that was very short lived, it does not take much to get throttled

I am not a heavy downloader and yet i was throttled for the majority of the time

For instance, yesterday around 7:30pm i did an update on my Apple Tv which i would estimate to be around 300MB or so and took 17 minutes to complete. once completed low and behold i was throttled down to 2MBPS

So anyways i decided let me stream a movie, now while streaming i did a speed test and still had 0.6 MBPS down and 0.9 MBPS Up available so i was not killing the line.

After the movie i checked again and was still throttled to 2MBPS

Then i checked again just after 12 and guess what, still throttled

Only when i woke up this morning was the line back to normal

The throttling is extremely sensitive and i spend 90 % of my time being throttled when i wanted to use the link

I have logged a support request this morning and received a copy and paste job response within minutes which did not address my issue at all. It was a generic response

This has been a really bad experience thus far :-(

Hi Viashen,

Atleast you have 5mbps line where you can still stream when you are fupped, some of us here have 2mbps so when our line get fupped we cannot stream any video. Basically switch off the router and wait for an hour before we can stream anything again. I have raised this as a concern to Bitco many times, but same response as yours. However, Mike have promised to downgrade his home line to 2mbps and perform a test. So lets see what happens.

I can only imagine your frustration :-(

Well i basically also have a 2MB line as i'm forever throttled

You know things are bad when you have to not use the internet at ALL just to remove the throttling

I'm in the same boat

I don't download a lot but if BitCo sees 300MB as high usage and wants to throttle me then we have problems :erm:

I do my big downloads afterhours when I go to bed. When I wake up in the morning, the downloads are done and I'm on 5Mbps. Then again, as said before I don't download much at all. Gaming and streaming seems to not be affected at all throttle or not. So 90% of the time I won't even know if I'm throttled or not. I got it for gaming and streaming and I have no issues. Try doing your downloads at night.

Hi Pitbull

I don't mind downloading at night but if i do simple app updates on my phone, iPad or Apple Tv for instance then i get throttled

Like last night when i did the Apple Tv update, took 17 minutes and i was throttles for the remainder of the night

I can't stream HD and even youtube viewing is slow when i switch to HD

I pay for 5 MBPS but am on 2MBPS for most of the time which is my problem :-(

I dont know if this is possible so pleas bear with me. Cant we have streaming(NTV, Netflix, Hulu, Hulu+, Amazon, Youtube etc) running on the same port for everyone and have this running at 100% of the link, have sony, android, apple, microsoft stuff running between 70-90% of the link and the torrents or news groups at 50% of the link.

Better yet, Give us 5 MBPS links as we pay for and put a soft cap of say 300 - 400 GB then us users who are not intensive downloaders won't suffer for the sins of the others

Interested in getting Bitco because Telkom won't provide me with a fixed line :( but will wait and see what happens regarding this FUP issue. No use in getting it if I'm constantly being throttled...

I substituted DSTV for this so i can do streaming and enjoy the freedom of internet to download etc within limits of course but it's very restricting the way it has worked out for me

I'm on the same boat as you..

Yeah, something is not adding up there. I have to download at full capacity for the full hour before I am throttled, and then even if moderately using the line (emails, browsing and Lync calls) I am unthrottled after just more than an hour.

I also do what Pitbull does, if I do have any large downloads I schedule them for nights or weekends when I am away.

It is quite possible that I may not notice my line is throttled as I am not a heavy user at all, but all tests I have done confirm what I have said in this post.

Hey Sparky

I got throttled doing an update for my Apple Tv which took all of 17 minutes, i wasn't throttled before i did the update and was throttled after

I then streamed a movie and still had 0.6 MBPS available as per speedtest while watching the movie

I waited till after 12 and was still throttled, so my throttling is definitely not working as it should as i spend more time on 2 MBPS than i do on 5 MBPS :-(

Or offer a capped option if the FUP stays the same.

Lets give the guys a chance till Friday

Mike did say they reviewing the FUP and its a changing policy.

I'm sure he has taken all our ideas and they will come up with a plan.

At-least Bitco has this open policy and are at least present and trying to fix issues.

Loads of other companies would show middle finger

Hi Viashen,

Thanks you for the feedback

I will send you a PM so we can discuss in more detail off thread but i have taken a good look into your line and usage and found the reason you hit the FUP after downloading at full speed was because their was previous usage on the line attributing towards the FUP

If you look back on this thread you will see where i explained how the FUP works based on the leaky bucket algorithm, if you read this it would give you a good understanding on how the FUP accumulated traffic works.

I can confirm your link will automatically recover after approximately 1 hour back to the full speed

i will take this opportunity to double check all your configuration, please let me know if you would like some further assistance in this regard?

Ok so i bit the bullet and applied for a 10mg upgrade over my existing 5mg. Having trouble with netflix streaming at lower rate that cause my viewing pleasure to be less than ideal . Bitco says they will evaluate my readings and confirm if said upgrade may continue. I seriously hope I can watch my fav tv show withouht the image losing quality midway and then picking up 15 min later after the 10meg has been installed.

Hi Blackmax,

I personally have a 10Mbps line and it works extremely well for online Streaming, even when i hit my FUP i don't notice much of a quality difference.

With the 10Mbps Line if you hit the FUP you still get a full 5Mbps download so more than enough for most media services

Hope my team approves your upgrade :-)

Send me a PM if you have any problems or don't get approved so i can investigate for you

Mike

Hi prasanv,

I am in the process of responding to your PM, I downgraded my home line to a 2Mbps Link and i have run several tests on Streaming media, File downloading & General web browsing

I will send you some feedback shortly on my results and we can compare and then post some general feedback in the forum
