Buying alts only makes sense if you plan on it doing good long term. Pineapples though...

Not all bitcoin transactions are confirmed at the same speed the more you pay the faster it is confirmed by our wonderful miners.

When transactions are low it typically takes 15-30minutes, with volumes like this if you dont pay enough you could wait a day or two even

So the people who have their coins in a "wallet" for example and want to sell on an exchange they better pay up to move it quickly
 
It should be noted that lots of times when there's heavy traffic on the network there's also a big dump. The $20k one was the biggest of both.
