Should I get it?

I've got BD Internet Security 2011 and it's been OK-ish. It slows down boot times and shutdown times, the PC (Explorer and Chrome) is hugely slow when it's scanning. On the upside, it's very good at detecting the crud that might make its way onto my PC through flash drives or the net and it's got a useful device detection scan for any kind of storage drive that you hook up, cameras, flashes, even phones. It updates regularly but my main gripe is that it slows everything down.

I've been told MSE is good - does it have that device detection thing? What about updating?

I was also looking at ESET/NOD32 but I've been told to avoid it. Why?

Advice appreciated.

TIA.

Been using Kaspersky Internet Security 2012, Very good anti virus in my opinion. Most anti viruses will slow down your computer a tiny bit

Personally I have tried both and Eset imo is better. Bitdefender is more user friendly but it impacts Pc performance much more than Eset does.

MSE is good at three important things:
- Detecting Viruses
- Staying out of your way
- Not wasting system resources

It also has an option to scan all removable media.

I'd recommend it any day. There is no need for you to pay money for a AV.

OK, thanks guys, I'll look at MSE. But there must be a catch somewhere, right? Why would Microsoft give anything away for free?

There's no catch. It just works really well.

I guess they are hoping to get more people to use a good free AV so that people's experiences with their OS's are better.

Oh, and about the updating - it integrates with Windows Update. It happens in the background with other updates. Updates are regular, but not annoyingly so. Maybe 2 or 3 updates a week?

Hmm good point.

LOL nottachance, it's MSE for me then. BD used to complain if you didn't update it everyday!

Thanks bud.

I used to have Bit defender internet security a few years ago.

This thing made my computer SO SLOW i actually had to send my computer to a computer shop for repairs. I couldnt change my desktop picture [it would freeze up the whole system].

I now use Avast Free Antivirus. It is really light, i havnt seen any performance drop and it does the job. Here is what it has:

+ Antivirus, Spyware and PUP (Potentially unwanted programs) protection
+ System Shields:
- File system shield
- Mail shield
- Web Shield
- P2P Shield
- IM Shield
- Network Shield
- Script Shield
- Behaviour Shield
+ Sandbox (This allows suspicious programs to be run without affecting the system)
+ Web Rep (Shows you the reputation of the website)
+ Site Blocking (Blocks user defined websites).

All of this is wrapped up in their Free Antivirus system. Avast works like an well oiled machine :)

I agree. MSE is amazing and it feels like its not even there. Does not slow the pc down at all.

OK, so I've got MSE. It works along with Windows Firewall, right? How good is Firewall? :erm: I remember a few stories about it being easy to get through.

We were just discussing this in another thread. I don't use a 3rd party firewall, and I've never had any issues. That goes for most people on myBB, I would guess.

You can't compare MSE with Eset or Bitdefender though simply due to the fact that MSE doesn't have anti-phishing, anti-spam, it's malware detention is also literally non-existent and it uses the Windows firewall which depending on your windows isn't exactly the best in the world. Also I've seen a few Pc's infected with a virus that specifically disabled MSE and rendered it useless. MSE is just a free solution for basic users who don't do internet banking, that's why when I ask a customer if he/she does internet banking I always know from there which anti-virus to recommend them.

I'm sure Bitdefender is a more fully-featured product. Thing is, I don't want to anti-phishing, anti-spam and what not integrated with my Anti-Virus. Those kinds of protection happens in my browser. I want my AV to detect viruses and malware, and not slow down my PC in the process. MSE is brilliant at this.

Nonsense, where did you get this from?

They dont. In order to use this 'amazing free' software you have to BUY their operating system.

BD, eSET and Kasperskey are all rated as the best there is out there.
AVG is rated the best FREE solution out there.
Personally I like eset but for an alternative I use MSE. So far no problems with it.
I use my brain (wetware) for phishing or other such scams/stuff.

OK, so my I safe to do online banking and that kind of thing with just MSE and the basic Windows Firewall?

I would say so. I do.
Also, just be smart about where you go and what you do online and you'll be fine.

Bitdefender a while ago kept on crashing and stops working, AVG did not detect viruses on a flash drive, multiple times. NOD 32 Antivirus rocks, I have it running on about 130 PC with very little problems, worth the money and it does not slow your pc down.
