BlackBerry abuse solution in the works

This is very good news for average BIS users! I myself am on a BIS monthly plan with Vodacom and my speeds for browsing are horrible. I often wait more than 30 seconds for a Google Mobile results page to load! I believe bringing this network abuse to a stop, will hopefully aid in solving my and hundreds of thousands of other users' bandwidth problems.

Thanx for the update MyBB! :)

These "abusers" must be stopped the BB internet is already slow cause of them but also it's about time SA got its own local BB server.I hope that traffic will pass through the local server and give us a better BB experience.

So if we do get a local server do we also get enhanced services ? Viz. BlackBerry Podcast, BlackBerry Traffic, News Reader etc ... Oh how about bloody visual voicemail !

This doesn't right, if it means we get a local server and they are able to filter out users, that would mean to me that the traffic will not be encrypted O_O, they can see exactly what it is we are using our BBs for.

While i agree they should stop the bandwidth hogs, this is not the way imo.

Christmas will be quick so don't rush, rather spend more time and do it properly.

As I understand, we already have local BIS servers and for those concerned about security, you don't need to decrypt a packet when determining volume of traffic.

Hoping for a better BB experience. At the moment it generally is so slow its actually annoying. We use a combination of BES and BIS

If this is the case then why did they say they cannot determine what traffic is running through to shape the abusers? Are we talking about deep packet inspection similar to what MWEB or other iSPs do on their network?

I don't know why they said it ( quite possibly marketing vs technical ie: lack of knowledge ) but it's a simple matter to log traffic from one ip to another ( phone to server ). Logging traffic does not require breaking the encryption and if you ask the ISP's like MWEB etc they will tell you that if traffic is encrypted, the can't do deep packet inspection which affects their shaping policies, hence their stance on high volume ssl traffic as abuse of their shaping rules but they can certainly tell how much bandwidth or the number of packets received.

The problem I suspect is more one of volume of traffic and the device capable of inspecting so many packets as on a public network is rather substantial.

so you not allowed to use your "unlimited" internet on BB then?

I think they are talking ****.
In the 3 years i've had BIS i have never had a good browsing experience. I do not even think it is plausable to download the amount of data every "week", "month" from Vodacom on BIS. BIS is generally 2 speed, dead-slow and stop. If this problem exists, then surely it cannot be as widespread. Maybe this is an excuse for our beloved operators to filter/shape BIS to death in order to make that extra billion. To the young ones out therw abusing BIS, well done. Were being ripped off enough.
To Vodacom: Stop whining and do what you need to do. Fix my slow BIS. Your client's feet will do the talking.

Uys however reassured ‘normal’ BlackBerry users (who do not download large media files) that the solution will not affect their services.
Kinda hard to affect something that runs at dial-up speed anyway.
I am very happy with my 250MB bundle and the fact that I can use it at HSDPA speeds.

I agree with Rouxenator!
