Friends of mine have tried to tether their BlackBerry handsets as USB modems but they say it can't be done. I haven't tried, but I'm not inclined to go through the hassles for nothing - has anyone successfully run their BB as a USB modem?

I thought it could be but you can't use BIS
The is ridiculously easy in windows using the Blackberry Desktop Software. It is even easier via Ubuntu Natty Bluetooth. In Blackberry desktop software you just click Connect (or something along that line). For ubuntu bluetooth (not KDE, KDE's bluetooth GUI stuff is worse than editing the rfcomm configs manually) you search for the phone from your PC, pair it and you are automatically asked if you want to use it as a modem.

Yes, that's all you need. Just keep in mind it IS NOT FREE! . When you tether you will be charged because it doesn't use BIS (the free unlimited internet you have on your BB) . That is most likely where the mis-information comes from, you can't use BIS on your PC from your phone (there are/were some hacks around this, but i'm not sure it works) , but you can use your BB as a modem at whatever your provider charge per MB . Most BB users probably don't load any bundles, so you'll be nailed with that R2 per MB nonsense.
So make sure you load additional data bundles before you go wild with this.
Just have add that my ubuntu bluetooth experience can no longer be called as wonderful as I did before. It just fails to pair for no apparent reason now. So from a fresh install it works fine, but after a week or so it just doesn't. Hence, the plea for official RIM linux USB driver support:

I have a very old Blackberry (Bold 9000 I think) which I'm using as a normal phone - no BIS. I'm going overseas and will be given a local Sim card by the company I'm working for over there. I will obviously put the Sim card in my Blackberry to use normal phone functionality, but I also need to use the SIM for 3G internet on my laptop. So I want to tether the Blackberry to use it as a 3G modem (so I don't have the bother of continually swapping the Sim between the phone and a 3G USB modem).
From what's written above, this should be simple. BUT... when I run Blackberry Desktop Manager, I don't see any option to connect to the internet. My options are: Media Manager, Application Loader, Backup and Restore, Device Switch Wizard, Synchronize. Then there's a menu item called "Options" and the two items on it are Connection options and Data folder options. If I choose Connection options, I get "Connection type" (USB) and Bluetooth options, which are not available (Bluetooth is turned off on my phone).
So - what now?
