Hi guys

im also deciding if i should wait for the storm or get the bold.
waiting for mtn as they have better value but they are taking their time!

do you not think that the storm is going to be overpriced here?

prices from the uk from the vodafone site:

600mins, 500 sms's
both at 40 pounds per per month
blackberry bold FREE and the storm 300 pound pay in!

500mins, 100 sms's
both at 35 pounds per month
bold FREE and storm 500 pounds!

i have also sent vodacom an email and their reply was:

Kindly note that theBlackberry Storm has not yet been received or tested.

The period of time it takes for a handset to enter the local market is approximately six months from the time that testing is started. Please note that not all handsetsthat enter testing will be approved for use in SA.

so first question is are we actually getting it and then if we dont wont it be too expensive?
when is the bold coming out on mtn?

also does anyone know if the email/web browsing is included in the mtn price?
its R599 on an anytime 500 on the bold but i have been told by a few mtn shops that it is incuded and others say it is not!

Hey,

I'm on a BOLD through vodacom and all of the on device surfing is included in my contract price. MTN doesn't offer this facility - you pay per meg at whatever rate they are charging...

Its quite a conforting thought to know that whatever I do on my phone - mail news etc etc... it doesnt cost anything extra...

:)

Piesang -> Certain handsets allow you to install the Blackberry connect software which apparently allows you to use the BIS APN... Cound be worth looking into?

Pacol100 ->
Have you got a link that indicates the prices? My dad will be super stoked since he is with MTN... and says he is being charged for bandwidth...

I found this below that confirms 3 months FREE usage, but I haven't seen confirmation of the R69/month:

http://www.mtn.co.za/MTNServices/BlackBerry/Pages/default.aspx

MTN’S fantastic competitively priced BlackBerry offers include:
Brand new BlackBerry devices available at no additional cost on most price plans, as well as upon contract renewal

MTN’s BlackBerry is faster, being supported by GPRS+ and, in some areas, by the even faster performance of EDGE technology
MTN provides BlackBerry device financing options, which means that you have access to BlackBerry without having to take out a new contract or pay for a device upfront
MTN has a dedicated team of experts trained in handling personal and corporate use of BlackBerry
MTN will offer three month unlimited e-mail usage with no additional data costs on the BlackBerry APN

piesang - i am fairly sure its only on blackberry's as the browsing is only free when you go through the blackberry portal - this will stop people from using their phone as a modem and getting unlimited usage.

fruitbat - i cant seem to find any links anywhere too! i can only assume that this is because they do vary their price on the BIS. Seems to depend on the package and is usually R60 or R69.
walk into any mtn store and ask - as i said earlier i think its only on the blackberry

i have a document from mtn which says the BIS charges for the curve and pearl and can email that to you if you want
BIS price for Bold hasnt come out yet as far as i know

Thanks man... but i'll pass on the info to my ol man to speak to MTN... and see what comes up

I just spoke to someone at MTN direct and they told me that MTN was already testing the Storm and it could be available as early as January, but they're not sure. Now I don't know if I should wait for the Storm or get the Bold, the R350 a month is a bit much for me already, what do you guys think?

i'm not sold on the touch thing, also the Storm doesnt have Wifi, u need to way up what u prefer to get.
the Bold has a 2MP camera, Storm has a 3.15MP
I am leaning to the Bold, as I prefer the keyboard
I think the Storm is BB answer to iPhone novelty

I still don't understand why on Earth anyone in SA needs Wifi, please explain this? Surfing at Wifi hotspots always seems much more expensive than using 3G and how often does one actually find oneself at a Wifi hotspot in the first place?. The only thing I can think of is maybe some companies enable this at their workplaces for employees, for the rest of us I just don't understand.

Camera's not too important for me, I've come from the world of touchscreens that long pre-existed iphone - I had the SE P910 and my P990 was only just ruined by Voda'care' and now I can't use it anymore, so I'm stuck with a SE W800 until I get a new phone. I love the touch screen interface on SE UIQ phones but since they've officially killed UIQ (one assumes because it couldn't manage Edge or HSDPA or on board GPS) I've given up on SE (perhaps I'll go back in 2010 when the new Symbian comes out)
One thing that is critical to me is a keyboard as I do a lot of typing (I'm a writer and whenever I have an idea I have to write it down or I forget). The P990 was excellent in this regard, I got rid of the flip and I just loved that keyboard (not good if you have fat fingers though). From the reviews I've just read the Storm on-screen keyboard seems to not be very good for long typing sessions (I don't imagine on-screen keyboards can be) so I think I will stick with the Bold after all (if MTN ever gets stock that is). Actually all the reviews I've read for the Storm praise the novelty of the touch-screen UI but all seem to say it needs a lot more tweaking and RIM released it too early, so that really seals the deal for me.

but damn, the Bold thru MTN is great deal, just phoned CCity, and they have a 'VC special' 349 on a BB Talk 100 (100 anytime minutes) for 349 + 130pm for the device. Thats 479! Ouch

MTN still rocks with a 349pm on Anytime 200, about 90minutes anytime talk time. And no pay in.
Whats going on?

Only problem is.....what are MTN planning to do about the damn SATNAV!!!

Its a pity Garmin wont work on it.

yeah thats one of the main reason why I would get the Bold, for the GPS. One needs good GPS software. I guess thats one up for the Omnia then.
I find it hard to believe theres no other GPS option. Other than that 349 with MTN incudes everything, incl BIS. Its a deal!

Lets google and see what GPS software we can find for the Bold. Must be something out there.

well, the Bold comes with turn by turn directions, but not sure if its voice

GPS:
The built in GPS capabilities and BlackBerry Maps software provide turn-by-turn directions, letting you get to where you want to go. Geo-tagging support automatically records the location when you take a photo.

despite this, its always nice to know u got options in case it sux

I've got wireless throughout my home.

Also - unless Telkom ended it - you get free wifi access from various hotspots around the country. McDs also gives you a certain amount of time at many of their restaurants.

Really? I assume it's for Telkom internet subscribers only? Will visit McD's more often now. Thanks Bwana. Oh and Dudley turns out Garmin is just for US, but you can use Amaze for free on the Bold.
