Blackberry Bold Tips/Tricks/Apps Thread

Hi, i recommend the latest .247 firmware, best connectivity/battery out of all the versions I've tried to date.
@assagai : Thanks - looking at the bb site (after choosing mtn), the latest version they have is .216. Krypty's link above goes to the more recent .247 version - just started the download now.

a Battery pull is just physically pulling the battery from the unit. This reboots the BB. The on/off of the BB is more like a sleep mode personally.

@Krypty - that makes sense now. Thanks for that - I just realized now that the power button doesn't actually switch off the device off! Still a lot to learn...
Also, did you manage to get your hands on any half decent decent pod-casting apps?

did you uninstall the previous version of the firmware first (it's separately installed, uninstall from add/remove programs) also make sure you have the latest version of desktop software.

you must use 4.7, uninstall the previous version of the device software and the desktop manager from add/remove, reboot if requested, install desktop manager 4.7 first, reboot if you have to, then install .247, delete vendor xml and follow instructions from link above.

Ok thanks. The phone is new so there shouldnt be a previous version installed on my pc. Ill just update DM to 4.7 and install .247 exe then?

You don't have to flash the phone.

What you want is to debrand the phone however there are issues with this that if the process is interrupted that you will "brick" the phone meaning that it will be a process to get it up and running.

I have an Vodacom sim in a MTN supplied 8900 curve and I have the MTN icon where my Vlive icon is supposed to be but Vlive still works perfectly.

If the icon does bother you then I suggest pressing the Blackberry key and selecting hide on that particular icon.

See this link for more info on debranding a Blackberry -> http://www.google.co.za/search?q=de...s=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a

n00b question:
If I get a BB Bold from a Vodacom4U store, can I flash it (to get rid of the Vodafone Live! nonsense) and use it on MTN without any hassles? BlackBerry maps, BIS etc will work as per usual? And would it void the handset warranty in any way?

I have been using iHeartradio app for BB for over a week through BIS. It has about 150 US radio stations but today suddenly when I try to use the app it switches from BIS to the normal APN?!? WTF?! It was using BIS with no problems and then suddenly it wouldn't connect through BIS. Very confusing...

Only change it if you want to reduce (almost eliminate) the risk of accidentally going onto the MTN APN and being charged at standard data rates. How to change it is noted above.

Greetings lads. I'm using a Curve 8310 but my questions are about apps mainly :)

MSN Messenger. Is it just me, or does it know when you're away from your PC and sign you in on the phone automatically?

Does anyone have App World and if so, have you been able to d/l even one app? I just get errors.

I managed to get Shazam onto my phone - its awesome! such a useful little program.

YoU should be logged into all I'm programs all the time, eg I use Google Talk and as long as my phone is on I'm logged in.
App World only works in US, Canada, and UK right now so it won't work on your phone.

Let me explain a bit further. I'm always logged into MSN on my phone and when I get to the office, I log into the desktop version of MSN which logs me out of the mobile version. At lunch I left the office and my boss asked me for something via MSN and I recieved the message (on my phone). I didnt log in on my phone when I left and I didnt log out of the desktop version. So my question is - does the mobile version use the internal GPS and detect if you move from the area you logged into and log you into the mobile version (if that makes sense)?

re the App World. There's a way to d/l it outside of the US/Canada/UK.

EDIT:App World OTA link for those of us outside US, CANADA and UK

I can't get the App World to download anything. It works fine but won't download anything which is pretty pointless.
