Blackberry Curve 8520 Tips Tricks & Apps Thread

All versions of Opera can use BIS, follow the above APN instruction and then open Opera, it should work. You might have to reinstall it (5 is a beta afterall).
It is possible to edit word and excel files on all Blackberry's (I think Powerpoint too)

Anyone managed to find a pouch for the 8520 yet? Preferably one that protects the screen?
Where and how much please?
Thanks

BIS and BB curve 8900

Hi Guys,

Yet another newbie question from a new BB user.

I am trying to figure out how I can tell if my Curve 8600 is connected to BIS...more specifically I am trying to figure out the icons.

Currently the icon I see is "EDGE" which is the same as when I am not connected to BIS.

My primary concern is that I dont want to be landed a big data bill at the end of the month because I wasnt surfing in the realms of BIS...

Help appreciated!

- Craig

oronte...

On the Bold, you get a BB icon indicating that you are connected to the BIS/BES whereas it doesnt appear on the 8900 (or if it does, I certainly cannot get it to display). This is what fueled this post.

Thanks

@SKUZZYKAT, EDGE/GPRS means you have a data connection to BB network. edge/gprs - means you dont, but can get SMS/voice calls.
You will always be on BIS if you are a BIS client on contract. If not, its best to browse through the BB browser and not the vodafone live browser as on prepaid you pay for that data. As I understand it though, all data is free on a BIS contract, vodafone live browser or not. To be safe, dont use vodafone broswer. Mail and attachments, all included, limitless, in BIS charge

So,

If I use Garmap's (which I have been told doesnt not use BIS and instead uses the p/meg data charge), how can I see this on the phone.

i.e. is there any way to see when I am being charged separately for data which is not included in BIS (does the icon change)?

I know of someone who went ballistic d/l youtube videos on his BB since he thought it was included in the BIS...only to find that he was being charged separately!

Thanks

I saw one at my local Vodashop. Made by BodyGlove. It's a rubber casing that has a hard plastic screen protector built in. I think it was R150. I'm seriously considering getting one as my phone already looks bad after only 1 month.

I bought one a few weeks ago; works quite well, just be careful how you put the screen protector on or (like me) you have air-bubbles and sections that stick up on the sides - will make it come loose sometime in the not too distant future.
Just sorry they weren't available sooner because my screen was already scratched before I found it...

Ok I'm one step closer to getting navigation on the 8520. I bought an external Bluetooth GPS reciever http://www.expansys.co.za/d.aspx?i=159701 its pairing and working correctly now all I need is a download of the Vodafone Sat Nav app now the offical download page is detecting that my phone is not supported but there must be a hack to get around this? I understand the app itself will install on the 8520 hardware. Anyone have any ideas?

just got my BB curve 8520 yesterday, bought it from a friend whom got it on his contract and didnt like the phone, must say i love the look and feel of this phone its so smooth, as for the browsing I haven't played around as yet but will keep you guys posted I Love this phone

ok realised now that I am still getting charged for data on my prepaid acount after I have activated the BIS on prepaid and the GPRS icon and EDGE icon shows in bold. Is their something I am missing somewhere guys ?

This has been posted earlier in this thread but here goes again:

Menu > Options > Advanced Options > TCP/IP and tick APN settings enabled, for APN: put blackberry.net user/pass blank.

That will ensure that the _only_ out is via BIS and you can avoid accidental data charges from errant apps.

You can just clear this info if you want to revert.

The Blackberry Bold Tips thread has this nicley documented though ;)

Ok so after a whole day and a half of useing my new BB 8520 on vodacom prepaid I realised.....its crap totaly crap. I never and i mean never get a EDGE signal once. When I pop my mtn simcard in there I get edge all the time..So now I am pondering can I use my mtn sim in my BB and just buy a data bundle ? Cause the speeds on vodacom BIS is horifying. And how would I go about in getting the internet settings on my BB if i Use the mtn sim ?

strange cause I am sure they will put it up on their website or something or their would have been a huge topic on MYBB by now ?
