Blackberry Curve 8520 Tips Tricks & Apps Thread

Questions

Guys

Maybe you can assist. My wife just got the 8520 on a Vodacom contract, but I have a few questions that I hope someone can answer.

1. How do you change the homepage of the browser. I need this to be something other than VodacomLive.

2. Can the 8520 be setup to receive personal end work emails? She works for Old Mutual and they probably have an Enterprise Server, but can the Blackberry be setup to use BIS and BES?

thanks

Heinrich

Firstly, do _NOT_ use the VodacomLive Browser, you will be billed at R2.00 per mb if you use it.

Only use the default BlackBerry Browser.

Choose the BlackBerry Menu button > Wrench > Advanced Options > Browser > Make sure that the two options are set on Internet Browser, the WAP one cannot be changed.

After doing the above save and exit, then:

Choose the BlackBerry Menu button > Wrench > Advanced Options > TCP/IP > Place a tick into APN Settings Enabled and for APN type in blackberry.net

Do not tick the other options at all, save and exit.

To save, just press the BlackBerry Menu and choose Save.

That save should save you wasting money :D

The BlackBerry Internet Browser is the icon that looks like a Globe, _NOT_ marked VLIVE one.

Changing the homepage is is simple within the menu and you can add favourites quite easily too.

It is possible to run BIS in conjunction with BES, but the BES part needs to be set by the Company IT people.

Anybody know how to get the 8520 working as a tethered, I'm strugging to get it working using both the usb connection and trying over bluetooth.

I'm running windows xp and I have changed the apn to "internet" on the blackberry and I put in the extra initialisation string on my pc.

Anbody have any ideas? I've succesfully used this method in the past with my old htc tytn 1?

I'm on vodacom btw if that helps

Please be aware that tethering will completely bypass BIS and will attract charges of R2.00 pee mb.
You will have to remove any info from your APN settings, it should be blank and unticked.

Choose the menu option then wrench > advanced > tcp/ip > should all be blank.

If you have not yet installed the BlackBerry desktop manager, install the latest or update to latest version, then choose the connect to the Internet option.

Let us know how you go.

Hi all.

Does anyone have any problems receiving mms? My wife has a curve and gets email and everything else (sms's included), but mms will not come through. We took it to the Vodacom "care center" in Gateway, but all they said was it should work, take out your battery and put it back in. But still no mms.

I do get MMS, some very annoying ones, but yes I do get them.

I am currently running OS Version 5.0.0.411 (leaked) so not sure if this is a problem with the OS version you are on.

Do not recall any issues with MMS on first receipt of my handset while on the SP supplied OS.

I haven't even looked at upgrading the OS. Is it worth a try? Do I need to back everything up or just use that BLackberry Desktop manager that comes with the phone?

It is always wise to keep a backup of your phone using BDM, that way your contacts, settings etc are available in case of a restore needed.

Whether or not you choose to upgrade, do the backup irrespective.

Download a copy of the SP supported OS and keep it in case you wish/need to revert.

With those safety nets in place, you decide if it is worth it or not.

There are other peeps using OS 5.0.0.411 already, comments regarding improvements will surely be forthcoming :D

As I said before, I did get MMS while on OS 4.6

Seems the os is already up to date. Is there any way I can input the mms settings manually? What would the apn be? I tried blackberry.net, but still no mms.

If her work email account is web based than she can use BIS or she can tell the old mutual IT guys to route all her work email to her personal email so she can view it on her B B

Hey guys, my VC contract is due for an upgrade, was wondering If the teething problems experienced by some of you guys have been sorted out, like the slow browsing etc. I'm thinking about getting the 8520 on the Blackberry Talk contract, even though the 8900 is also available. Any advice?

Both VC and MTn have sorted their BIS issues.

The 8900 has a nicer screen resolution but still with the trackball, known issues about it getting stuck.

The 8520 has smaller screen resolution, but now with the new trackpad, much better than the trackball IMHO.

Much thanks dude :) Think I'm gonna go get mine today. Going with the 8520, as I've also heard a bit about the trackball issues with the 8900.

Does anyone have a live score app for soccer? Viigo wasn't up to date at all..

Firstly, in Viigo, there is a setting which you can choose to immediately update on selecting a channel, set either on / off.

In BB App world there is an app called Goal Mobile in the Sport / Recreation section will provide exactly what you want, from SWC 2010, English, Spanish, Italian Leagues etc, enjoy!
