Blackberry Curve 8520 Tips Tricks & Apps Thread

The problem is Vodacom does not have EDGE where they have 3G and the only blackberry that has 3G is the bold.So if you in a 3g area and using a 8520 or 8900 curve you will have slow speeds

Great, so now VC know what they have to start fixing, else _don't_ offer EDGE/GPRS only capable devices without indicating you do not have sufficient coverage for them, remove the adverts and recall all the phones sold on this Contract.

Does that sound unreasonable? They are very actively promoting the 8520 and 8900 devices with unlimited (insert whatever) certainly not unlimited Internet browsing.

Got my BB8520 on Friday and I'm loving it. Got it mainly due to the fact that my fiance has the bold so we're using the bb messenger now instead of sending each other text messages all day.

Didn't see anyone post this so my two tips are the following; to set up e-mail accounts go http://mtn.blackberry.com from your PC, register your device (using the IMEI and PIN), very easy as all you do is enter your e-mail address and password and it does the rest.
If you are on MTN and need help don't phone 808, rather phone the MTN data helpline on 1555 (from your phone). When I got mine I had the browsing problem (this browser needs a wi-fi connection) but a quick call and it was sorted. An easy way to know once it's done is you will sudden;y have a MTN icon in your menu which if selcted opens your browser. You can still use the normal icon though (which I prefer).

Currently I have gtalk, MSN messenger, flickr, facebook and a weather app installed on my phone. Will post here if I find any other cool apps.

What weather app are you using? Please stick your speedtest results in the other thread too - will be interesting.

The weather app I have installed is AccuWeather, got it via the Browsers default start page. Scroll down and click on news and weather and then a few pages on you will see the AccuWeather link, once you open it and choose your location (e.g Pretoria, South Africa) it will automatically add the icon to your device within a few hours.

Cool, thanks for that, just added it now too :D

Quick question about Accuweather- does it show the temperature on the icon itself like weatherbug?

Unfortunately not, does weatherbug do that? My fiancées bold has a really nice weather app but it isn't available for the 8250...

Have been looking through the Blackberry appworld and man they have some cool apps, and a lot of free apps I would love but either my bb or SA is not supported... man that sucks!

I have also installed an app called Viigo to test and play with, basically it's a glorified RSS feeder but has a lot of nice default feeds like Engadget, BBC, crackberry.com, Geeksugar, etc. It also has a weather application, sports and Audio & Podcasts. Haven't tested everything but will keep playing. The only drawback is it has adds at the tops of each page but it doesn't bug to me too much... yet. I reckon it will be useful for killing time if you're waiting somewhere ro just dead bored :)

If you want to try it go to http://getviigo.com/ (from your bb browser) iirc and check it out. From your PC go to http://viigo.com/download to have a look.

One more thing I tried is the new Opera mini beta. HAs tabs, speed dials and looks quite good. have only used it for a few minutes so far but 2 immidiate cons I picked up are; to close the browser you can't just use the "back" key, have to open a mini menu via bb key to selct exit and then confirm. It also sets itself as the default browser when installing without asking and I would prefer to use the bb browser for simple links such as those received via an e-mail or what-not.

Actually I stand corrected, when you highlight the icon it does show you the Hi and Low and conditions - e.g mine now says "H26 L13, Mostly Cloudy"

Quick question guys. Is the getviigo news thingie using the BIS or is MTN gonna charge me for using it? As well, is the new opera mini utilising the BIS as well?

Thanks

To everyone with the Blackberry 8520 MTN Anytime 100 contracts; is the R149 inclusive of BIS? or is it a R149 + R69 type deal?
Thanks

I had to fight for it - when I was trying to get BIS activated they told me it wasn't included in my package so I threw my toys at the store manager who I signed up with. Then it was included.
Not sure if the deal has changed since then..

I checked my account on MTN active and they were billing me extra, i.e. R149+R69. Will pop back into the store and check with them.

Does the new Opera Mini 5 Beta for Blackberry use BIS or do I still need to do some type of work around as stated on the Bold Tips and tricks page?

Best to go to:

Menu > Options > Advanced Options > TCP/IP and tick APN settings enabled, for APN: put blackberry.net user/pass blank.

That will ensure that the _only_ out is via BIS and you can avoid accidental data charges from errant apps.

You can just clear this info if you want to revert.

The Blackberry Bold Tips thread has this nicley documented though :D

update. I tried the apn tip and opera 5 refused to work. I've found some pages that. Suggest that opera 4.x use BIS natively. Can anyone confirm this.

Anyone else unable to setup a new email address suddenly? If I try it tells me "Your device had a problem connecting to the server."

Is it possible to edit Word documents/powerpoint/excel with the Curve 8520?
