I recently got a blackberry 7290 running OS 4.0 but im using a vodacom prepaid sim card, I cant seem to get GPRS working, it displays gprs in lowercase letters and has a message underneath saying Data connection refused. I tried changing my APN to internet with no user name and password as you would on a normal phone but that also doesnt work. Ive phone vodacom but they wernt much help. I have heard from other people that there is a way to get it workin on prepaid but im not sure how, if theres any one that could help on this it would b much appreciated

Yeah - on a blackberry the gprs changes to GPRS when you've got service.
You need to sign up for blackberry service which probably requires a contract.

It does. R139 per month. Why would anyone want this over the free cellphone email, quite elegant too, provided by gmail? Which even groups your emails nicely into "conversations"? R139 per month just to have your email "pushed" to you? Makes no sense.

Probably because it can be integrated with your corporate exchange address and most pop3 mailboxes, comes with Carrier SLA's, redundant infrastructure etc etc .... 8 million subscribers cant be wrong

I simply forward my corporate and private email all to my gmail account, from where I can elegantly access it from any browser, and reply with the appropriate return addy.
I hope all that gave some comfort to those users in the recent US countrywide outage of the service, not to mention the little legal scare last year, when the courts thought seriously about taking away their toys.
Well, they might not be wrong, but they are a tiny minority. Gmail now at 32 million mailboxes and growing, Hotmail at 23 million last time I looked, Yahoo at 27 million mailboxes. And all of them free, vs R139 per month. I think going Blackberry was probably a good decision two years ago. Today you can get free 'push' email from free mailboxes.8 million subscribers cant be wrong
But my new question is (still playing with the Blackberry that Vodacom gave me for mahala, I wonder why?) ....anyway, my new question is, it seems that unless I subscribe to the Blackberry service, I can't even use the browser on the phone? Even though the sim has a 1G data contract?

An accurate comparison would be the number of mobile users. Subscribers accessing via their computer is hardly a fair comparison. Gmail only offers pop and not imap which, imho, makes for a less refined experience.
Also, unless vodacom, mtn, cellc and virgin decided overnight that data was free then none of them are 'free'.

So....you are happy to pay R139 per month for the IMAP experience? That seems to be the only (remaining) advantage that the Blackberry has. For me, the grouping of emails into "conversations" outweighs that. But your mileage may vary.

However, since I only bring down headers unless I want to look at a specific email more closely, I am going to struggle to use up R139's worth of my data bundle....let's see....that's about 500MB, right?Also, unless vodacom, mtn, cellc and virgin decided overnight that data was free then none of them are 'free'.
And let's add to that that any browsing on the Blackberry still has to be paid for seperately anyway.
There you go - I don't just bring down headers I get all my email for which I'm happy to pay. I'm happy not to have to sit and debate if I want to download something and I don't run the risk of missing something important due to frugality.

Maybe it is just that my thought processes are oversimplified, but I have never felt the need to "debate" this sort of thing. It's not frugality, it's called discrimination. It's easy and quick. Try it.
In fact, I hardly ever debate anything with myself. Mostly I find myslef in instant and total agreement.

The answer is NO. You have to have a Blackberry email service in order to browse the internet, even if you do have a data bundle (prepaid or contract.)
