Blackberry PlayBook, OMG!

Looks great except that you have to plug it into a Blackberry phone to get 3G. It does have wifi though.

This looks awesome - I'm definitely going to wait for it rather than buy an iPad...
 
I like that fact that it will tether to my phone. It means that I dont need to spend more money on an additional sim card and that i can take advantage of my existing BB plan.

I don't there's been a decision on whether it supports 3G directly; my guess is that there will be models that have 3G, and others that don't.

RIM said 3G and 4G models are coming in the future. My guess is they are trying to get out a model ASAP and the easiest way to do this was to add the tethering option rather than built in a fully fledged radio stack and chip.

Now - do I order a 16GB iPad with WiFi & 3G from a friend of mine who lives in Hong Kong and is coming to SA in Nov, or do I wait for iPad 2 / PlayBook (and miss this chance?)

EDIT: Looking at the HK Apple store and converting it back to rands places the iPad 16GB with WiFi & 3G at R4,333.

Doesn't mention the BIS/BES will be used- is it tethering in the sense of phone is used, but additional data charges apply?
 
Ok you pricings are wrong, you can pre-order them arleady from best buy from $499 = 16GB; $599 = 32GB; $699 = 64GB. As a comparison i looked at the Ipad and they started at $800 so the PlayBook will be substantially cheaper than the Ipad, you should be able to get a 64GB 4G playbook for less than a 16GB 3G Wifi ipad.

There are going to be 3G and 4G models all supporting wifi, the 4G will either be by LTE, Wifi or WiMax.

Teathering witht he playbook allows the PB to use the active BIS/BES service on the handset, essentially its like Remote Desktop between your Phone and Pad, specific operations occur on the phone while being displayed ont he Tab, without teathering it can either use wifi or an active sim in the Tab

Also during teather the internet speed will be determined by the handset and not the network capabilities of the tab, if you dont have a 3G handset it may be more feasable to just get a prepaid sim and pay the R60 per month for faster net via your Tab, hopefully there is an option to select which network to use when teathered, but will have to wait and see. I sure will be getting a PB as soon as it arrives.

The iPad2 prices start at $499 for the 16GB wifi, not $8000! :eek:

RIM is matching Apple's prices model for model on the wifi models. No reason to think they'll deviate on the others.
