BlackBerry Protect is a free application designed to help find your lost BlackBerry smartphone, and keep the information on it secure. It can also offer peace of mind for small businesses and families, with the ability to protect multiple smartphones.

Back it up

Your contacts, text messages, calendar and bookmarks can be backed up wirelessly. It’s done automatically, and as often as you choose (daily, weekly or monthly).

You’ve lost your smartphone. Why wonder who has access to your information? Simply log in to the BlackBerry Protect website and lock your device.

Pretty sure you’re not going to see it again? You can delete the information on your smartphone and microSD card from the BlackBerry Protect website too.

Find your smartphone

Maybe you’ve just misplaced your smartphone. Lock and display a message on your smartphone Home screen for whoever may find it. Then locate it on a map and go get it. Or if you think your smartphone is nearby, simply force it to ring at full volume.

Tested it myself now, backups working well; can set it to daily, weekly or monthly.
GPS was quite accurate, ok my phone was @ my neighbors house, but the dam things smaller than my hand so that's a pretty decent level of accuracy.
I could also send an audible alert to my phone so you can hear it incase you just lost it in the house or office.
Send an on screen message or even lock the device with a password so it cant be used or even do a remote wipe to destroy all your data.

I would say extremely worth it especially when you consider the price tag, R0.00.

Will this still work if your phone has been stolen and the sim card had been swapped out? I highly doubt it and that is usually the first thing thieves do.

Still, the app definitely sounds useful and worth a download.

Use the phones pin not the number, it is however safe to assume unless they use a BIS enabled sim your pretty screwed but not all thieves are smart.
I got a non BIS sim here somewhere will test it out and see.

There will be as BIS enabled sim card in it sooner or later.

Installed. Pretty nifty :)

1 thing I noticed when changing sims is it alerted you to the fact and said backup was disabled until you linked the account. At that point all the security it offers gets flushed down the toilet.

I assume it can be uninstalled like any other app, its also safe to assume you can't use the functions once its removed.

It may be a good app, but such an application without stealth is essentially useless, it should require a more advanced uninstall process as well as password protection on the settings as well as uninstall, even to the extent of requiring they be different.
It should never alert to a change of sim and possibly even require a security process be followed to utilize this new sim, essentially bricking and making it useless unless you actually are its owner.

Another useful thing would be for it to utilize the standard data link active on all sims in this event allowing the device to be tracked, locked or wiped irrespective of BIS.

Its a start, but it was clearly developed by software specialist with no background in security and absolutely no paranoia.

Installed it. Seems to work well.

Not sure why people are so interested in tracking down a stolen phone? Are they planning on going in guns a blazing to retrieve it? I think I'd be kind of peeved if the cops utilised valuable resources tracking down a stolen phone.

You joking right? Maybe because it belongs to us? Maybe because they need to arrest these thieves? Maybe to retrieve stolen data
We don't live in a perfect world - there's a finite amount of police trying to combat what at times seems like an infinite amount of crime. Would you prefer a cop was looking for someone's cellphone or responding to an armed B&E?

The solution is to make a stolen phone completely unusable remotely. No cops needed. No data in the wrong hands (own data should be backed-up so it should not be lost due to theft). I understand where Bwana is coming from ... what will the cops do with a person caught with a stolen phone when it takes ages to get murderers and rapists to trial and then see them get off on some technicality way too often, and the jails are packed byond capacity with serious criminals? The justice and correctional services systems cannot deal with stolen cellphone cases. It's a mess, I know.

Technology is in this case the answer. Every phone should come out with a small amount of semtex mounted on the processor ... LOL!

I'd love to be able to brick a phone remotely but we all know the network operators are not going to want that. Even stolen phones generate income for them. :o

And Gov is happy to get more tax income, and it creates jobs, and it redistributes wealth, etc.

... and the muggings create income for the medical industry, and if the victim dies, well then there's another vacancy and less pressure on limited resources ...

Yes, I know it sounds crazy ... crazy world we live in.

Maybe not such a great idea - think of how many couches would fall victim to misplaced cellphone detonations.

Well, then those selling couches will be selling more (we have to help them too) ... :D

Arrrgghh ... my replacement phone also popped just now ... that damn OS bug hasn't been fixed yet!

LOL!
