i think people are joining out of curiosity just to see what was all the fuss about bbm.

+1

I downloaded it, added one contact I already had on WhatsApp, and then never used it again.

Possibly, but a lot of those people are going to stay on BBM too just because they tried it.

The biggest issue I have with BBM at the moment is that it is a pain in the ass to add people based on their individual pins. With Whatsapp all your contacts are there when you download the app. If they could find a way to get your contacts populated quickly then they will have a good foundation in place. Even if it is done by linking your cell number to your pin and then allows you to see who has BBM out of your contacts. Because ultimately its success or failure depends on the users ability to build up a network of contacts quickly. The Pin being linked to your Blackberry ID should have been done ages ago, it would have sorted out a lot of the issues now because it could simply repopulated your contacts list based on which pins from your old list are active.

I tried for curiosity - added 3 - and deleted due to battery drain

Any talk of spurts at this time are premature.

BBM is a battery hog of note and it is slow and if you disable the annoying icon that permanently sits on your notifications bar, it becomes unreliable with delayed messaging. (Samsung Galaxy S2)

I hope it gets adopted widely - sick of whatsapps crap reliability. People getting messages 6 hours later WTF.

i use whatsapp all day long and have been doing so for quite a few years. I have absolutely NO issues with messages getting delayed. Must be something wrong with your phone.

There is nothing wrong with the app, its just not better than whatsapp. I'd say whatsapp is ahead of it in terms of features. I like the Read notification but otherwise it has no other benefits.

Ye - myself and a 6 mates installed it to see what the hype was all about. We have all uninstalled it again.

Something wrong with your phone. WhatsApp a lot daily. Never any issues.

Clever marketing strategy from BlackBerry, a friend ported away from BlackBerry and after installing BBM, putting all of her credentials she added all her old contacts that were stored. Once she felt the feel of BBM on her device she went out and bought herself BlackBerry the latest and she is very content with her buy.

Too much competition as is. WhatsApp/WeChat now BBM if BBM can have wikitude onn the app then it would be awesome add. Enjoying we chat too much, girlfriend is on BBM on her S4

It's a data hog it uses 10 times more data than whatsapp

Clever marketing strategy...

I don't think there was any strategy, it's more like an oh ****! we're in *** reaction.
They should have ported bbm to other devices years ago before alternate IM's gained market share. Too little too late IMHO

Would like to see active user statistics a year down the line. The hype is cool now, but how many users will keep on using BBM

I would be one of those users that installed it, saw that it was a pain in the ass to add contacts and uninstalled it.

The barrier to use for the app is too high considering Whatsapp installs, picks up all your contacts and away you go.
