BlackBerry speed tests

I put my virgin mobile sim card into my blackberry last night, speedtest was very similar to that of BIS, roughly an average of 70Kbits/s. Tried browsing on Opera, oh boy, what a difference! Not sure what that means, but one of the vodacom guys i spoke to at vodacare said they were shaping browsing to make more bandwidth for the blackberry push email service. I have no problems with my emails currently, the vodafone satnav has even started working, but I still can't browse at all!

I have a Vodacom 3G modem. With the Vodacom sim card, if i browse CNN.COM with 3G connection it takes about 5-6 sec to load. if I access heavy site like DSTV it takes 12-15 sec

I then put my MTN card in, same place. Only gets EDGE. CNN.com takes 3-5 sec, DSTV takes 10sec or less.

Vodacom has a rubbish data network. Funny how they often hide under the guise of "oh you only have GPRS or EDGE" connection. Do the math of how much data EDGE transfers, and how big a website is and you will see it comes nothing close to EDGE speeds, nevermind 3G.

So a cellphone with EDGE like the Curve 8900 on BB should be getting FAR better download speeds. and I dont you can blame RIM's BIS. Im sure that thing is run like liquid and its on a mother of a pipe.

Just providing a bit of contrast here, the magical fix has not provided consistent throughput for all though:

Sent via my BlackBerry

The amount of shaping being done here reminds me of the WA Trials earlier on.

No matter how many attempts to discredit the speed test app, I have found it to be consistent with actual feel of the service rendered.

I have also seen, borne out by this thread, where performance is fine one day and quite poor the next.

The only thing which has been consistent is the slow as molasses BlackBerry Internet Service provided by Vodacom.

Time to move on again, seems BIS is now properly sorted :D

I have not experienced a single time out or pages not loading.

Have not even felt the need to run the Speed test app since BIS is running really smooth.

This is all one really needs, for your BlackBerry to do its thing so that you can do your thing ;)

Looking good.

I was running OS 5 on my BB 8520 - internet browsing dead slow! Downgraded back to OS 4.6 and Internet Browsing is fast! Am I the only one?

This is BS. A refund's not gonna cut it if this crap starts again. I want my contract cancelled so I can change to a network who can deliver on their promises.

Lol, so not even a month of "improved" speeds (which were on a ISDN level actually). Pathetic.

Browsing speed is so so, just tested some links - nothing impressive though.
