Blackberry Storm!

Storm OS's

Just wanted to keep you guys updated on my experience with 4.7.0.90.
As nice as it was for a week or so, I have reverted back to 4.7.0.87.
i enjoyed the speed, and bigger keyboard etc. But after a week or so it decided to go into a continuous reboot. I was forced to do a device wipe, then load an earlier release.
I have read similar comments on other forums with people having the same issues. So beware.
Let me know if any of you have had any issues after a week or so.
Cant wait for the next release of firmware.
To answer 'vodacom3g', I enjoy the tactile feedback, with 4.7.0.90 I noticed i was getting a lot more comfortable with the landscape keyboard. But I may revert back to my bold, Its just so much more efficient and fast.

Im interested to know what version of firmware came loaded on the vodacom devices. Was it 4.7.0.87 or 4.7.0.78 like the european operators.

Sorry forgot to add that the R999 pm is on a Blackberry Talk 500 so you get 500 anytime minutes, unlimited email, unlimited browsing, sat nav....etc.So its quite reasonable comparing it to the normal talk 500 which is R800 a month.

Seems that Vodacom Direct is now offering the Storm on a Talk500s package for only R800, with a R1 999 pay-in. Talk100 and WeekendEveryday packages are also advertised.

.78 actually. Typo on my side, apologies. But RIM-SA told me we'll be getting a greater than .90 firmware soon.

Only problem I have right now is the battery life. It really is not good. Less than a day, which for me is a killer. See on the web people say it improves a lot after a few full charges. Will see.

Also, is your SatNav working on the Storm? Tried mine today for the first time and it just sat at acquiring the satellites. Had to switch back to the Bold to find my way (and then the *&%$ thing routed me via downtown JHB to the to the airport.)

Gotta love Vodacom Sat Nav, I have reverted back to a true SATNAV device (My GARMIN) I have learnt, use dedicated devices for dedicated tasks!

Sat NAV

Used the Vodafone Satnav for the first time yesterday and must say it seems pretty good. It took about 20 seconds or so to pick up satelites for the first time.

Battery life for me is just under 2days. It just makes it to the evening on the second day. I have mine switched on 2g under mobile network options. The area I live in has poor 3g reception for some reason at the moment and I get full bars on 2g. So if its surfing or tethering I need to do on the device, I switch to 3g. I've actually assigned the left convenience key to manage connections instead of voice dialing. My american accent is not to good for voice dialing anyway. :)

Anyway cant wait for the new os to leak. At least .87 is stable, just not quick enough.

Always, use the most appropriate tool for the job at hand.

When I'm doing off-road riding on my bike, I use a Garmin (because it's more rugged and the maps are pre-loaded).

But when I need to quickly go somewhere in town, the BB does an excellent job at navigating and, by definition, I have it on me. No need to carry an extra device.

The BB SatNav might not have all the extra features of a Garmin, but when it comes to voice-based, turn-by-turn navigation, I can't see where the Garmin is better.

And my BB has two distinct advantages over my Garmin:

1) Because it downloads the relevant strip map for the route, it is always the most up to date map. On an obscure island, I recently found my Garmin ran out of routes while the BB merrily kept on navigating.

2) The 'Walk' feature is very handy and is not on my Garmin. This allow you to be routed via alleyways, etc. where you cannot drive. Used it a lot in the old cities in Europe.

But I still consider the BB an "ad-hoc use" GPS. Which is perfect for 99% of everyday requirements.

Storm NAV and OS

I used to use my curve for gps tracking on my offroad mountain bike rides. I think the software I used was 'gpsed'. i could then upload my track to my computer in the garmin format. Pretty cool.

I see 4.7.0.100 has just leaked for the storm. about to load it.

Any idea what's in .100 ?

Little soon to say, but people are already saying its faster than .87
Will let you know over the next couple days.

As keen as I am on the Storm, my research has uncovered a small little HW problem. People seem to be getting dust under the screen. This is from American sites, though, and I'm unsure if that would make a difference?

I am very pedantic and this could be a deal breaker for me.

I read this as well. I think it would be best to give RIM a few months to sort out the problems with the Storm before buying one. If they can sort sort out the dust issue, improve the touch typing, and sort out the long list of software issues the Storm would be a really amazing phone.

Quite surprised to hear this device does not have wifi.

Sure it may have the unlimited internet thing. But isnt this limited, no VOIP etc?

OK, so I finally took the plunge and got myself a Blackberry Storm. My trusty Nokia 6110 Navigator will go to my wife after a few days....

This is my first experience with a Blackberry and I was most impressed with the size of the screen. The screen is very bright and the colours rich. And I thought my 6110's screen was good....

I found navigating and selecting with the touchscreen (and clickthrough) very easy to use. Typing was a different story, and I still have to get to terms with the SureType (predictive text) method of typing. But then I have struggled with predictive text methods on previous cell phones as well. The QWERTY keyboard in landscape worked best for me.

GPS (Vodafone Sat Nav) seem to work well, but I've only tried it in Sandton/Bryanston.

The phone come with Version .78 of the Blackberry OS. I experienced no glitches, freezing up, etc of any kind. This is a very good phone.

I have just purchased a BB Bold - reason I didn't get the Storm was that I heard my network - MTN was not going to be getting the Storm, that it would be exclusive to VC. Anyhow, the Storm looks like a nice phone and might just get one cash if the user feedback is good.

My question for now - can the Bold...or the Storm for that matter, be tethered to a PC or Mac to allow connection to the internet by 3g ? And....if you have the MTN biz package, would that mean one could connect with your laptop to the internet with unlimited data ? If that is possible, I would have no need for my 3G modem and data bundle.

Thanks for the link Shake. For me, the unlimited data using the BB is not that great a deal - I find it highly frustrating trying to navigate a web page with a tiny screen, and a tiny little roller ball (on the Bold). I would far rather use a laptop and 3g modem. It took me ages trying to look at a page on the Bold - rolling the arrow to the correct spot on the page, and then zooming, then zooming out and going down to another part of the page then zooming in again. This is where I find my iPhone excels.....swipe finger across the screen to a spot on the page you want to read, and then simply open thumb and forefinger to zoom in, then drag your finger across the screen to see the entire page....easy peasy. I wonder if it is that easy with the Storm ?
