Blackberry - The problems begin again.

BB Bold 9700 (vc vs mtn)

Thx guys for the feedback wrt mtn pricing :). I'll try to stick it out till June perhaps and see what shakeups happen in the market since Telkom Mobile is coming in soon and ICASA has appeared to have grown some teeth with interconnection fees.

The interconnection fees are a reason to believe your phone will cost more not less. The networks have stated that if interconnection goes down they will find other ways of maintaining their profit margins which means everything else goes up. The only thing to wait for is the possibility of a Blackberry slider but that probably won't arrive till December.

If you're going to MTN you might wait for it to return to R350 a month but it won't go lower until a replacement is available (probably end of the year). Basically Blackberry prices don't generally go down they only go up (with the networks) if you buy from expansys or one of those places they do go down.

i agree with oronte, i waited since beginning of the year, and the price just got up, didn't go down. T.T

so i think u should go for the MTN350 @R459 p.m. if u have higher talk needs OR the MTN200 @R369 if u talk less.
my logic is, take away your talk time value (R350 v.s. R200 worth of airtime)
you then have a Bold 9700 cost at (R459-R350)*24months=R2616 incl BIS(valued at R59*24months=R1416) for "TalkAlot" - MTN350
OR
you then have a Bold 9700 cost at (R369-R200)*24months=R4056 incl BIS(valued at R59*24months=R1416) for "TalkLess" - MTN200

so if deduct the BIS cost as prepay user would (since you have to subscribe it anyway)
then you either get R2616-R1416=R1200 for your Bold 9700
or you can get R4056-R1416=R2640 for your Bold 9700

both scenario i think it's a good deal to get the Bold 9700, since prepay buyer will probably pay over R5000 for the phone (I'm guessing, please correct me if I'm wrong) and it still excludes BIS & airtime.

it's not a perfect logic. but it's enough to convince myself to take it.... :p

@noonoofish

ok, sure. So if i go for the 9700 on a vodacom bb talk 100 @R429 p.m. the cost attributed to the phone is about R4080, assuming a value of R2 per minute of talk time they give u and R59 p.m. for BIS. I really can't stand MTN's network quality (voice and data) so I think i will just have to suck it up and pay for a vodacom contract.

yeah, MTN's system for contract customers r really messed up, their internal CRM systems are STILL not integrated; although their prepay system is quite efficient mostly due to external handler. Good luck! :)

ok, it must just be the area's i frequent where i find MTN to be a problem. MTN data signal seems to suck where i live, tho maybe it's the phone i have, Samsung Omnia. Such an irritating phone, can't wait to get a BB or something else. MTN is quite a bit cheaper and u get free sms'es included, but it's pointless if i don't have faith in their network quality. And usually when i check voicemail messages I can't hear the message properly because the message is missing chunks of audio!!

First try your mtn sim in another phone before you give up on them. Also on mtn you can get your voicemail sent as a wav attached to an e-mail so you won't have to worry about that anyway and you can save the message on your phone and boost the volume, etc.
It could be your omnia...

@oronte: please advise, is MTN's voicemail to WAV a free service or the Voicemail Plus service?

I am so fed up of MTN's standard voicemail which delete your messages automatically after 3 days... If it's a free service then I must go activate it and have all voicemail sent automatically to the BB mail for records. :D

It is free with all new contracts since they launched Anytime. I've just blanked on the name but you can register on the MTN website for it (it might be i-mail). You can also get the voicemail sent as an MMS but I believe they will charge for that eventually. They plan to keep the e-mail service free I believe. I haven't had any of those audibility problems since I got it as you can listen to the file on your phone's music player. And it's one more way I can centralise all my messages on my Blackberry message app (although i-mail is for all phones).

GPS on mtn vs vc

A friend tells me that u have to pay extra for GPS if you are on MTN but if u are with Vodacom it is free (it's a Vodafone branded GPS installation). Is that correct?

More info in i-mail. I still don't know where to activate it tho... Do i enable it on mtn.co.za or mtnsp.co.za?
MTN offers world first - a web-based voicemail messaging innovation
2006/11/20

MTN brings a world first to the mobile telecommunications market with the introduction of the innovative i-Mail (MTN Integrated Mail), a new fully integrated and flexible web based mailbox.

This mailbox solution allows contract customers with internet access to listen or view their VoiceMail, FaxMail or VideoMail at the click of a mouse. i-Mail is offered only to contract customers free of charge for the first six months from launch today whereafter subscription rates will apply.

i- Mail enables contract subscribers to set message notifications, change passwords, set up message forwarding options, set up message playback modes, block callers from leaving voice or video messages , enter numbers for personal assistant and fax, schedule reminder calls and configure ‘’MessageMe’’ automated delivery options to any email address or MMS capable handset. In the future Enhanced VoiceMail customers will also be able to record multiple greetings for different times of the day.

The service also allows you to save your messages on your Laptop or PC, which is particularly handy for FaxMail users who would like to archive their faxes electronically for future reference.

Join mtn.co.za with your current number and the option will be available on the mymtn menu (do it on your PC).
GPS is free on MTN and it's Garmap vs Satnav on Vodacom (and Garmap is obviously better).

hrm my mtn Bis stopped working today :s

bleh usual 'credit rating' and connection charges story..

data charges for MTN's garmap?

Sorry for the off-topic derailment of this thread... but we've come this far already :o Oronte, are there data charges for using MTN's Garmap?

Thanks guys,

I am assuming Garmin Mobile is free to d/l and to use?

Cheers,
The software comes with a free 24 month license, but data charges apply when using the software.
So downloading the maps while you navigate will be the only thing you are charged for, the data is minimal though.
