BlackBerry user numbers dwindle in SA

probly lot to do with BB taking long time to bring comparable handsets to compete with Android.
certainly have lot to with R60pm uncapped internet no longer available on new BBs... no doubt most people, got BB purely for the fixed data cost.
so no surprises there... just like Nokia, threw away a good thing going, by not staying up with the times

With the lack of unlimited BIS on new contracts, and really crappy phones.. this is no wonder at all.

Most of the people I know who had BB's have moved off to other brands now.

"But I can like to have a phone with the keyboard buttons since I cannot type a proper BBM to my bizzas with these long nails, you know? You know, on the screen of the Samsung? Doesn't work with these acrylic beauties. Nah-ah. And also, the Internets on it are free. Those Samsung's, they eats a lots of data. Like 300 giganets. Not the case with my BB here."

BB only succeeded because it was uncapped, the handsets themselves are terrible.
Now that BBM is available on other handsets it has created an even bigger bleed towards android handsets.

Partly their own fault? They killed their competitive advantage of BIS / BES fixed rates on the newer Q and Z models. The older and expensive ones like 9900 that used normal BIS had such slow browsing because the providers throttled the living life out of connectivity...

To date there still is little services that I know of that comes as close to an enterprise BES server for business users. We could do anything to the phones - disable SMS/ Cameras, block, whatever...

Don't understand why they launched BBM to other manufacturers. That was the last nail in the coffin!

the equivalent is Afrihost 500 + 500 APN on an MTN based phone.

if only Afrihost decided to go with vodacom rather than MTN, so there was a better network behind it.
and I can say that because i have 2 contracts on MTN. and both are getting canceled ASAP

I would not say it was bad.. keeps BB in business (people won't replace their handset for another brand because they are still reachable on BBM from other platforms).

What was a deal breaker is the uncapped being cut....

BIS simply won't work on the newer Blackberry 10 phones. BIS is too slow and crappy to be used on such high-end devices so Blackberry had to ditch this option. I can still see a niche market for Blackberry with their cheap handsets and BIS. Good for kids, poor people and people who are technology deprived.

Well when users universally despise your product because its slow, breaks easily and deletes contacts every now and then what can you expect?

if they throw in a 1Gb data bundle as standard with the BB10 phone as part of the hardware subsidy, they could win a few users back.
the physical keyboard is one thing the BB had over other phones, with on-screen keyboard only, especially for people who do lots of mails and typing on the handset.
nowadays, with everything syncing everywhere, and lots of people also owning a tablet, need for doing mails on the phone on the road is probly lots reduced too. there are options of add-on BT or Wifi keyboard also coming out for those who need

Even with BIS, the quality of the handsets are bad for the price that BB is asking.

Not even Lewis Hamilton can put BB back into pole position.

Ironically there is also the image problem with Blackberry now. In the past having a Blackberry was a status symbol of the successful business person. Now having a Blackberry shows the world that you are poor and can't afford a proper phone with a decent data connection.

I've noticed this too.

Or you work for a company that want to: "disable SMS/ Cameras, block, whatever..." :)

Do people even get company phones anymore? The trend is definitely towards BYOD (Bring your own device). The days of the company phone are numbered anyway.
