Singer Colin Vearncombe, known as Black, has died following a car accident in Ireland.

The Liverpudlian star - who had a global hit in 1987 with Wonderful Life - had been critically ill after suffering a serious head injury in the crash .

The 53-year-old sustained swelling on his brain and despite surviving in a coma for a number of days, he died today.

A statement on his Facebook page said: “Colin Vearncombe. 26/5/1962-26/1/2016. A full statement will follow shortly.”

The singer had been in a coma for two weeks in hospital in Ireland.
