Blocking porn through router

My son gets around shared network drive passwords, to watch 50 shades.. so yes... they're clever little buggers!

i know it doesnt go to the op's preference of simple but if possible you can deploy a pi-hole vm https://pi-hole.net/

then block port 53 on the router so they cant change the dns server on the device.

It's super-easy for them to bypass even that with 2 minutes of time and a little bit of brain power. And a horny teen has copious amounts of time and will pool their brain power with their friends. Having said that, they will end up smarter for it just trying to bypass crap...

You need something with deep-packet inspection to properly determine and tag the traffic so that it is blocked and/or routed correctly.

You can do off the shelf, but DIY is usually also a fun learning experience and cheaper. Mikrotik routerboard should suffice. You can find many open source / setup guides, here's one:

and if you want to block them but not you:

you can even play with QoS and shape any torrent traffic automatically while giving you highest throughput on streaming media or games to not interupt/slow down stuff

Luckily you can buy prepaid data and just watch it on a phone. Or perhaps get a VPN.
Better yet just go to friends.

OH you are trying to block it. Sorry no help here

Can you explain this more simply I have no idea what you mean. And is this on top of open dns?

You can add lists for adult content.

Official site: https://pi-hole.net/
Basically as easy as install e.g. Ubuntu on a Raspberry Pie, then just run the curl script and set the router DNS to the pie.

Again, can be bypassed if the kid is smart enough.

You're trying to cover every possible way, meanwhile the teenager only has to find one flaw.

E.g. routing, oversubscription, etc.
The reason I say that is that it's unlikely OpenDNS went down without there being an outcry.

Yup, pretty sure they werent down.

Also, users can set their own DNS servers on their devices to bypass it, unless you force them to use your routers DNS server. Think this can be done by redirecting all port 53 traffic to the routers port 53. Something like this:

https://wiki.mikrotik.com/wiki/Force_users_to_use_specified_DNS_server

But not doable on all consumer routers.

@candygirl do you know how these systems work?

Paraphrasing here and someone please correct me if anything is wrong here. DNS means Domain Name System. Domain name is something like icanliketowatchporn(.com).

You know that name, but it doesnt mean much to a computer. They need an address they can understand ( IP address ).

Your computer gets icanliketowatchporn.com, then asks the DNS server what address that is. It gets the address then opens up the web page at that address.

You can set what you want on your network, but they can use other ways to get the IP address for a website and just go directly there:

Did you configure OpenDNS to block adult content?

If you want custom Opendns filtering (not family shield) it needs a dynamic DNS entry or a static IP
Likely this is where the problem originated

Its quite a technical way of doing it and because you are not technical its going to be hard for you. I just mentioned there is ways to do it efficiently we successfully have blocked many company's that dont want staff viewing porn.

For you though i would try something like https://www.qustodio.com/en/ its a few mouse clicks and done unfortunately you need to pay for it thats the downside but with the site above you can still use opendns for extra protection.

I am a parent myself... I guess I just started as soon as I possibly could.
A suggestion here, and I am dead serious:
Rather allow some kinds- maybe a mag or two (yes that scene from the movie Blended) than to outright deny it. Don't want to mess up their sexuality and cause issues down the line
So limiting their access to porn will mess their sexuality?

Never heard such rubbish in my life.

Does it have to be installed on devices or just on router?

Yes set Open DNS to moderate. Blocks all adult sites. Open DNS has been working well past few days.

How do I get a static ip? Open dns is great but the ip keeps changing. Have contacted internet provider they can’t help. Can I run open dns ip update software on my iPhone? Who offers help to keep IP address updated or static?

Reserve IPs for their laptops against their MAC addresses.

You'd need to use the OpenDNS client to keep your IP updated,or DNS-O-Matic (which can update multiple Dynamic DNS services),probably on a PC or if you have a capable router you could use that

Give the kid one month with a paid Brazzers account. Then take it away. He won’t be able to watch free porn after that.
