Bloemfontein FTTH Thread

I'm on Frogfoot with Cool Ideas in LHP - very happy customer :)

I've seen a lot of noise on the Bloem Fibre FB page about Frogfoot being down in LHP a lot?

According to the Frogfoot site, build completion is 17 May for Bayswater. I really want fibre, I just hope with all the work they seem to be putting into Bloem that their network will be sound and handle all the potential subscribers.

I haven't had substantial downtime except for the previous time. The rest of the times it was for like 10 minutes but very rarely. I don't know if some parts of LHP maybe get more interruptions than others though.

Okay cool, been going through the Cool Ideas and Home Connect ISP feedback threads and it seems there's one common issue with Frogfoot and slow single thread downloads, but it seems only international? I don't think that's a deal breaker for me in any case as it should still be better than my 8meg ADSL line. Was more concerned about any potential downtime.

I suppose now I just wait till it's live, book an installation and then deal with the devil trying to get the ADSL line cancelled with Telkom.

If you need help with cancelling your ADSL, drop me a PM.

I didn't have a hard time cancelling mine and it was quite straightforward without any issues :)

Well I'm on a 20/20 line and I get around 18/15 on single threaded tests to London :)

I suppose now the real fun and games start, earlier planned completion was listed as 17 May, I see on the website it's now been changed to 30 May to go live. A part of me wasn't expecting it to be 17 May, but I wonder how many times or for how long the delays might carry on for.

I saw on the Bloem Fibre FB page people are upset with DFA who laid fibre in Dan Pienaar in Feb and they still aren't live, I just hope Frogfoot doesn't have such a long delay.

do you have a link to the page where it says 30 May?

Yeah, something is seriously wrong with the SADV roll out in Bloemfontein. I even asked @pinball wizard via PM the reason as to why things have come to a grinding halt, but have yet to receive any response.

As for Frogfoot, they seem to be moving along quite nicely.

@Goobie

You can check the coverage map on Frogfoot's site:

https://www.frogfootfibre.com/frogfoot/myaccount/home/frogfoot/coverage.jsp

Select Bloemfontein from the list and scroll to your neighborhood. They divide them into sections, each with an ETA live date :)

Decided to check the coverage map again this morning to see if anything has changed, interestingly, it's gone back to the old 17 May completion date. I haven't seen the contractors around in the area lately, so hopefully it's all going well. I'll hold thumbs that it'll be live by month end.

Forgot to mention earlier in the thread, a few weeks back, Mweb had some people going door to door to try and get them to subscribe with them.

They (SADV) finally finalised the fibre installation in my place on Tuesday, basically a year after laying the cables and installing. I requested that they activate my line end of June, as I had to give a month's notice to Afrihost and Telkom to cancel my ADSL, so would have to pay double for inet during June. My request was basically just ignored and they just activated my line without even replying... I see a long, difficult road ahead.

Also, they installed that ugly huge Calix 814g thing which connects to my box. Anyone know if I can somehow use a normal router with it, as I don't really want to use it. Just want to feed my line through it. I would ask them if they can at some stage just come and install a normal ONT with a WAN, but feels like I'm going to waste my time with that request

Yeah, I also waited about 8 months (at least) to get connected after everything was installed...so that was basically same for everyone in LHP...that went with SADV.
The Telkom line cancellation was ok for me, didn't have any issues, just took about 2 months. For Afrihost you pay 1 month ahead for your service and for telkom you pay for the service at the end of the month that you used, so keep that in mind. Also you have to cancel your dsl data and line first(1 month in advance) before telkom can cancel the telephone line rental(takes also 1 month). Do line/service cancellation for telkom online and call them.

I also got that huge Calix 814g ONT (It's basically a ONT and router in one device). Sad thing is they disable all services but 1 LAN port...so you can't even log into the thing they preconfigure it before installation. They did not have any small ONT's left so they basically give that for everyone it seem...and now they are again out of stock so other people have to wait for SADV to get stock again...
Yes, you still have to use your/ISP's router, that 814g is only used as the ONT, all other functionality has been disabled.
I also want to request for the small ONT, but honestly it will be waste of time and I highly doubt that it will be replaced anytime soon as they have a huge backlog of people that still need installations...

Yeah it's basically impossible to get into contact with them. It looks terrible haha. Okay, that makes sense. Tried to login to the thing, but couldn't. So I just connect my router from a LAN port into the OPT LAN port 1 with a normal ethernet cable and then configure the router?

Pretty much yeah :)

Seems like I'm up and running. Speeds look good. Ping is siting at 30 though for some reason

I'm with Cool Ideas. Over Ethernet, 50mbps. Ping on speedtest is 14 but on dota it's 30. Oh well

Glad to hear you're also online! My ping is about 9-12ms on speedtest and in game also 15-30ms depending on what I'm playing. Only Gautengers /Captonians will get sub 10ms constantly, us Free Staters will always have a min latency of 20-30 to local game servers due to our geogrpahical location.

Also keep in mind that most of our traffic goes to JHB before it goes elsewhere in the country, so if the server is hosted in CPT, the traffic will go to Jhb and then to CPT, which will add to the latency.
