Hi guys

Can you please give your views on adding a blog section to MyADSL/MyBroadband (from the other thread I am more confused than before :D). There are various possibilities, including having blogs ‘attached’ to this forum or a whole new section… Please give your feedback on this issue.

Regards,

RPM

IMO there are numerous more suitable places where someone can set up a blog. Best not to dilute MyBroadband (excluding Telkom ADSL)™.

If the information contained in the blog is relevant to broadband / it / telecoms, then cool -- why not :)

You cant limit the scope of an individuals blog.

Those who are really into blogging probably have a blog spot somewhere already. I think that if you hosted them here the novelty would wear off fairly quickly and you'll end up with only a few people updating regularly and may not end up being worth the investment (unless the blogging software is free of course).

Buhhh logs. No. Don't do it, please RPM. It would only give people like slimothy a recognizable url within which to practice HTTP based IRC.

I see nothing wrong with adding the facility if you have the server space and bandwidth.

I dought if there will be a flood of users rushing off to Blog, even on the most popular local Blog sites, there's rarely more than 10 active blogs.

So long as the Blogs don't appear anywhere in the forum, but simply link off the frontpage of the site, I think TheRodent's fears would be allayed. :D

That gives people a chance to either ignore or participate.
I'll probably just dupe the inane ramblings I normally post on my existing Blog as and when I write them - keeping two blogs going and posting on forums would probably mean the end of my business ! :D

I think this is a good idea if done right. Just have one blog (the mybroadband blog) where you invite certain forum members to submit a piece every now and then. Or if someone posted something really thought provoking on the forums, then publish it on the blog. This may be a really useful tool for the media as well, who do not have the time to browse every single forum post. I also think comments should be disallowed on ths blog.

I agree with TheRodent that every single forum member should not have their own blog.

That goes against the idea of what a Blog is.

A Blog is an area to post whatever you want (within the rules of the blog space of course) - if you want to post a story about how your cat coughed up an interesting fur ball, then you can. It's your space to play with. If other people enjoy your ramblings, all the better - they are free to comment.

I'll lay a bet that you won't get more than 10 active bloggers - there'll be a flurry of signups and initial activity "cool, I've got a blog", this will be followed by content such as :-

"Hi, this is my first Blog !"
or
"So, what is this Blogging thing all about ?"
or even
"Hi, I'm slimothy, below is my recent 12 hour IRC session that I logged :-"

That's pretty much the way Blogs go in my limited experience.

I did the same thing on my site, and out of all the members I have [nowhere near MyADSL's member count], I have 2 active bloggers - myself included.

My 2c.

Yes, i think its a good idea. I use a blogging program on my site called geek-blog (ignor the name)

its really cool and it allows for moderators ect ect ;)

I still think a single, 'moderated' blog will add much more value to MyADSL than 5-20 decent individual blogs. In my opinion our target audience here is the general public and not MyADSL members. We as members already have all the space we need to say our say in the forums. Joe Public is not going to have the patience to read through a whole bunch of the member's blog, rather provide him with only one to which the most respected MyADSL members can contribute.

Hi guys

Thanks for the feedback. While the decisions about these issues will only be made at a later stage, it seems that a trial period might be the best idea, and to definitely not make the blogs part of this forum...

It would be great if some of the regulars could do a weekly Podcast discussing topical issues and news stories of the moment.
As usual though hosting/bandwidth could be a problem/expensive if 4000 members, plus all the myadsl guests are downloading it each week.
I would definitely listen to it and I am sure many others would as well.

I like martins idea and mrsmiths. Having an 'official' myadsl blog would be great if we could convince some of the regulars to keep it up to date with interesting overviews of events and happenings, whether on the forum, regarding Telkom, or industry or whatever. Would be a nice window for those not willing to dig through dozens of threads to find out what myadsls about.

Hi Fergus, MrSmith

This can indeed be of value…thanks for the feedback. There is so much happening on the forum that regular updates will be great! I will look into blog hosting software and see if there are any takers…

RPM

Get a few of the more literate and knowledgable members to contribute something. I'd volunteer to do a technical look at some new and interesting technologies.
