Blogs: Your feedback needed

Or Serendipity (www.s9y.org). I use this for my blog and its pretty good.

As for who'll be doing the blogging, I elect ic since he knows this forum better than anyone and seems more than willing to contribute :)

If one or two people are going to do it then rather call it an editorial.

Blogging lends itself more to an individual than a group so if it's going to be done then it should be done properly. Stick a strong disclaimer on the front end to make it clear the views are those of the individual and don't edit or moderate. A blog is a journal after all.

A collaborative MyADSL/MyBB PodCast is a great idea if bandwidth isnt an issue - what I am I thinking - in SA when isnt bandwidth an issue?

Hosting

Id be more than happy to host the official my adsl blog. I have just found a new host and i have 12gigs transfer and 1gig of space.
(this one is alot more reliable) ;)
:D

If it becomes :-

* an editorial
* moderated for reasons other than extreme bad taste
* only open for certain members

then it's no longer a Blog - you effectively kill the freedom of info that a Blog can bring by putting these restrictions upon it.

Either have a fully fledged blog, or don't have one at all.

The other ideas are definately valid.

For instance, rpm could keep a forum section open entitled "articles" that you post to by submitting your article to a group of moderators who could then read and decide whether it's worth posting in that specific forum. After the article is posted, people can reply to it as a normal thread.

To my mind it's all about having as much freedom of expression as possible.

One thing that people started doing in another technical forum I was a member of (Quake3 editing) was to start collating all the posts with useful information in them into a sticky thread.

I'm sure that's something which could be done here, a very unenviable task it would be to wade through thousands of posts, so I guess it would be a slow process that slowly gathers stream.

I think the best would be to have an aggregation page featuring forum member's existing blogs. Members interested in having their blogs featured could contact rpm to have theirs included.

I support you there Fergus. We could have this aggregated list of blogs below the "Latest Headlines" . You might want to call it "Latest Blog Entries".

Same here - whats wrong with rss feeds? Seems like a better idea if you ask me - people woud then first have to have a good blog to show before it is linked

Also the initial rush would kill all bandwith

ic, I think you've got the wrong end of the stick :)

What kilps was referring to and what I mentioned in my post was using the rss feeds of off forumites existing blogs out in the wild to create a blogs page on myadsl. This has nothing to do with the forum's rss feature. The myadsl blogs page would merely be displaying an aggregation of all the blogs of forumites who decided to submit their blogs, kind of like a planet-myadsl. It could even be spun off into a separate website if not everyones comfortable with having the blogs feature onsite. Check out www.planetplanet.org if you're unfamiliar with this concept.

My RSS feed only generates about 2Mb of traffic per month, with around 1000 views. I think it would be a great idea.

Yes, I already pointed out www.planetplanet.org, and its a great idea - but it doesnt support things like blogspot. Unless someone will offer MT blogs to people who dont have access to them. With alot of users, and alot of them probably talking rubbish (sorry, but true) a metablog is just going to be flooded.

I think something like a metablog may be a better idea (http://www.planetplanet.org/) and add people to it that have usefull blogs etc (This is not compatible with BlogSpot's atom feed - your blog needs a propper RSS feed)
Sorry karnaugh I missed your post :p

There's plenty of scripts out there that can handle atom feeds so that shouldn't be a problem. We can always hack something together ourselves if need be.

Personally I haven't quite figured out the difference between looking at any particular forumite's recent posts, and giving them a blog where they can write much of the same......I'm going to sit on the fence here until I know if bloggities will add value to MyADSL/MyBroadband.co.za...

As a thought, if bloggities are introduced, it might be an idea to start off with a trial run for a month or so, see if there is sufficient interest in them (views as well as posts), perhaps simplify things by doing this on a sister-site rather than the main site - whatever is easier from a bandwidth and stats point of view...

I agree with IC

I agree with that, I don't like the idea of people voting for posts, I think there should just be a blog section - any number of people would be happy to host them i think..

I think that was what RPM was planning to do ;)
