Hi there.

I followed through on the first set of instructions - i connected to a network cable and ran the speedtest. The speeds were a whole lot better: UL 93 and DL 51 Mbps. So it would seem the line is good!

What is the next step?

Well, your speed seems to be ok on the cable, so your wifi is not great, either on the router or on the laptop.

The easiest interim solution is to estimate the length of the cable required from the router to the place where you need to work, and then to get a cable like that so that you can do your classes.

Once you can do your work properly one can try to investigate the wifi issue in order to determine a solution.

What was your local ping with the cable ?

And another thing, the quality of the line may be different at different times of day, so do a few tests to see what it typically is when you work. Maybe test just before and after.

Can the router handle 802.11ac or 802.11n ? You may have to get an external wifi dongle.

Easiest would just be to give us the make/model of your router/wifi AP.

Safe -- My China

Hi there.

What is the next step?
Had a friend ( a lady ) doing exactly what you are doing now -- teaching English over the Internet
Also had 100/100 uncapped ( she had to take a loan to do this )

In the end it became so onerous and difficult ( lots of red tape and other problems ) that she gave it up
Ended up going to do frail care in the UK for a year
Also know of many a person that went to China itself to teach English -- some are still there.
Is this a possibility for you ?

IF
You are determined to carry on battling in SA then suggest putting out a request for someone on MyBB that lives in your area to assist -- Onsite ...

BTW ;
What is your proficiency / accreditation as far as being able to teach English ?
Lady mentioned above did some or other course -- which seemed to me to not really be up to -- Cambridge standards !

Hi there. Apologies for the overdue reply. Thank you for your help and advice. I was teaching in South east Asia and I am back now. The internet seems to not be too bad with cable. The speeds seem good and my classes are going ok. I do definitely think there is a problem with my laptops wifi connection. I need a new laptop, just dont know what would be best for my purposes. To teach you need some in class experience, a minimum of a bachelor degree and a teaching certificate. Your suggestion about puting out a MyBB request sounds like a plan too. I will look into that. Thank you kindly for your help.

I have an MSI but i got it in 2013 :-( I definitely think it is the wifi because i even battle connecting to my printer via wifi without encountering a problem. Do you have an suggestions on what laptop to upgrade to that will be fit for my purpose?

Why do you say you need a new laptop? Because its from 2013, or because of the connectivity issues?

The laptop could be fine and it could just be the wireless router placement that is the issue. Could have missed it, but how is the speed on wifi when youre next to the router?

Also try do a speedtest on your phone and laptop from the same spot and go to the same website: www.fast.com.

If your laptop is really giving connectivity issues it should be a lot slower than your phone.

Also have you updated to Win 10, that sorted out a Wi-Fi issues I had.
Also try seeing if there are updated drivers on the Msi website.
