Not sure how many of you buy blu-rays. The problem is that these are so expensive in SA, that I have to think long & hard before buying a new disc.

I always go to blu-ray.com to read their reviews before buying, but they sometimes get it wrong.

Maybe, in this thread, we can do our own reviews, or just general Q&A, of movies the benefit of anyone wanting to buy a paticular movie.

Now I know that we all have our own taste in movies, but I think that a description of picture & sound quality will assist in making a purchase.

My blu-ray collection is small :
- 300, The complete experience
- Black Hawk Down
- Star Trek ( the latest, I think its called Generations)
- Transporter 2
- Behind Enemy Lines

The best movie from these, by far, is the Star Trek movie. Picture quality in almost unreal, sound uality is also very good.

I've got the Dark Knight and the BBC documentary series Life.

The Dark Knight's video quality is ok, but the parts that are captured via the IMAX cameras are amazing. The sound quality is awesome.

Life just blows me away. The quality is rediculous and is by far the best Blu ray I have ever watched.

My favourite by far is BBC's Planet Earth. If you like documentaries, this one is a must.

The new Terminator is Awesome!!Also I have Dark Knight, Rocky 1 and Black Hawk Down. Looking to get Avatar in the next few weeks. 300 must be Awesome.

funny u should mention T4, I had the option of either T4 or Behind Enemy Lines yesterday. I went for Enemy Lines (cos it was half price). It was a real waste of money, looks like an ordinary DVD. I should have got the T4

Got Black Hawk Down and The Dark Knight, impressed with both

Are you sure? Cause I got Blu Ray rip of that in 720p and it looks amazing!

yep, im sure :)

The sound is good, gunfire always sounds good on blu-ray. The picture was nothing special though & I kept thinking, ' This looks like a DVD.'
The grain is very noticable in certain scenes, the detail on close ups, esp. peoples faces is not sharp enough. On blu-ray, I normally see every pore on a persons face, but in Enemy Lines, it really looks bland & 'soft'. There was not a single moment in the movie that I said 'Wow, thats clear' ......

I have a few.
Rated 1-5

Open Season - 5
Open Season 2 - 1
Indiana Jones and the Crystal Skull -4
IronMan -5
Monster House -3
Up -5
Watchmen -5
Startrek -5
Batman -5
Kung Fu Panda - 5
Bolt -5
CJ7 -2

My favorite is watchmen.

Out of all the animated blurays I would say that Kung Fu Panda looked the best.
Transformers 2 was the best for me from the more "real" movies, especially the parts that are in slow mo.

I only have 4 :(

Babylon A.D. Extended Edition - have not watched yet, as I got it today.
Dark Crystal - Amazing considering it's age!
Big Fish - Wanted it as did not have it on DVD
Godzilla - Also great.

but... I need to watch them all again on my new Full HD LCD as I have only watched them on my old HD Ready set :)

DVD collection... don't get me started! I'm sitting at +-300 and they are 99% imported limited editions (Criterion releases etc)

Who has a decent selection of music blurays ? The sound is excellent, but they seem to be difficult to find...............

Check Musica and Look and Listen. The Musica in Sandton have quite a few cool music blu-rays, as well as LnL at the 4ways Value Mart. I havent bought a music bluray just yet, still waiting for my Full HD AV receiver. But I have a 720p rip of the Linkin Park - Live in Milton Keyes and OMG its INSANE!!!!!!!! Its a definite must buy.

I buy my discs from Musica, cos they often 'mark down' from R300, to R199 or R220. And I can swipe my Clicks Club card & get points :)

My most recent (last week) additions are :

Die hard 4.0 - 5 / 5 - PQ is perfect, rivalled ony bt Star Trek

Ultraviolet - 2 / 5 - PQ is disgusting, looks like a cartoon most of the time ( Milla always looks good thought)

Resident Evil - Apocolpse - 4 /5

Twilight - 4 / 5( for the missus) - PQ is actually very good, not as good as die hard, but not very far off.

I've Styx. Madonna, and Bruce Springsteen music concert blurays. The Springsteen one is excellent in that you can distrinctly hear each and every instrument. Only downside of all these it that they only support 5.1, I would love to find a 7.1 or 9.1 music disk.

I'll go and buy Linkin park and Band of Brothers.

In movies, I have:

Most of the Star Treks (8 of them) - downside is that on older ones, you can see the crappyness of the Special Effects. On Star Trek 4 for instance, you can see that the backgrounds on some of the scenes are painted - it's very obvious.
Lord of the Rings Trilogy
Pitch Black
Monsters Inc
MIB
Troy
Life
Moonraker
Chronicles of Riddick

I'm going overseas next week - I'll see what I can pick up there (at probably half the price). I've looked at Amazon.co.uk - they have a good selection too.

I don't know if this has been asked before but what about movies that has been shot in HD and movies that are upscaled to HD specs. Is there a difference?

I know The Dark Knight was shot entirely in HD and it looks fantastic compared to some movies.
