BMW i4 M50 Price Announced for South Africa

The BMW i4 M50 is the first electric M car ever produced and the performance stats are impressive. Here’s how much you can expect to pay for this electric sports model.

Could you say the new BMW i4 M50 is the best of the electric i and performance M in one product? Irrespective of the answer, there’s no denying the significance of the BMW i4 M50 being the first electric offering from the M division.

Of course, being a product from the M division it’ll need to have the performance credentials and the numbers don’t disappoint. The two electric motors summon 400 kW and 795 Nm, giving it a claimed 0-100 kph in just 3.9 seconds and a top speed of 225 kph. These numbers are on par with the rear-wheel-drive BMW M3 Competition, which does 0-100 kph in 3.9 seconds, but has a higher top speed and a higher price tag at R1 860 000.

Range is said to be 465-510 km from an 83.9 kWh battery according to the latest BMW SA price list and the vehicle supports fast charging, with BMW claiming just 1.38 hours for 0-80% when plugged into DC. Interestingly, the international press release claims 395 km of range, so we’ll be sure to confirm which is the more accurate distance.

How much does the new BMW i4 M50 cost in South Africa?

BMW announces South African pricing for its 'quick-as-M3' i4 all-electric sedan

• BMW continues its EV offensive in South Africa with the price announcement for its i4 sedan.

• Only one model will make up the i4 range, the 400kW M50.

• BMW's new electric sedan will sell from R1 600 000.

BMW South Africa announced pricing for its upcoming i4 M50 all-electric sedan. The car, the EV (electric vehicle) version of the 3- and 4 Series, will launch in the country imminently, with the pricing set rather aggressively - contextually speaking.

According to the German automaker's official South African website, the new i4 will retail from R1 600 000 (before options), and only one model, the M50, will be on offer for the moment. The car's pricing puts it between the iX (from R1 650 000) and iX3. The latter has also recently been added to the local portfolio and begins life at R1 290 000.

The i4 M50 is powered by an 83.9kWh battery, of which 80.7kWh are usable. Power outputs for the battery are rated at 400kW and 795Nm, allowing the car to launch from 0-100km/h in 3.9 seconds. The top speed is 225km/h. Top speed aside, the sprint time puts the i4 M50 on par with the rear-wheel drive M3.

Both the i4 M50 and iX3 will in Q3 of this year.

TG's best electric executive car: the BMW i4

The sort of car that built BMW's reputation, now with added electricity

Why did you give the BMW i4 an award?

Because it shows how electric cars can throw off their shackles. They aren't eccentric or oddball or compromised. An i4 costs the same on finance as a 430i. The i4 began with one of the best all-round car formats from one of the best all-round carmakers. They electrified it with commitment and expertise, and the result is as good as or better than something fuelled by petrol. OK it lacks access to Tesla's supercharging but as an EV it is as good as a Tesla, and as a car it's significantly better.

BMW i4 M50 is M-Power's first all electric car but is it worthy of the iconic M-badge? - Harry's garage

Ouch, thats not great.
Obviously BMW have gone and not designed an EV.

Again.

When he opened up the frunk to show the mess of cabling it was pretty obvious this is a bodge job. I'd still like one (at half the retail price), but a bit disappointing, especially when the competition is far stronger.
