The facelifted BMW i4 will soon launch in SA, again offered in 2 flavours (including an M Performance variant). Here’s how much this updated electric car will cost you…

In May 2024, the facelifted BMW i4 broke cover, with this fully electric 4-door model sporting design updates, inside and out. Now, just ahead of its official market launch in South Africa, we can confirm how much this Munich-built EV will cost.

Of course, we’ve already brought you local pricing for the refreshed 4 Series Coupé and 4 Series Gran Coupé – and now we turn our attention to what is effectively the fully electric version of the latter.

The local G26-generation BMW i4 range will comprise 2 derivatives, as before. The entry point is thus still the i4 eDrive35, which again ships standard in M Sport guise. Now priced from R1 346 500, this latest version is R61 500 more expensive than the pre-facelift model.

As a reminder, the i4 eDrive35’s rear axle is powered by an integrated electric motor generating 210 kW and 400 Nm, facilitating a 0-100 kph sprint in a claimed 6.0 secondsand a top speed of 190 kph. The lithium-ion battery pack has a net capacity of 67 kWh, translating to a claimed range of up to 483 km.

What about the M Performance derivative? Well, the i4 M50 xDrive – which was the M division’s best-selling model worldwide in both 2022 and 2023 – is priced from R1 695 000in facelifted form, representing an increase of R7 100 over the outgoing version.

The all-wheel-drive i4 M50’s powertrain is likewise unchanged, which means it still employs an electric motor on each axle, which together generate peak outputs of 400 kW and 795 Nm. According to BMW, this flagship version of the battery-powered fastback will hit 100 kph from standstill in 3.9 seconds, before topping out at 225 kph. The 81 kWh (net) battery pack has a claimed maximum range of 510 km.

As part of a flurry of updates to its model lineup, BMW is rolling out changes to the i4 - basically an electric 4 Series Gran Coupe - introducing an even faster top-spec and a more efficient battery for the entry-level cars.

Said top-spec is now dubbed the M60 xDrive. It replaces the old M50 and, in accordance with the bigger number, gets a 56bhp boost to make for a Gran total of 593bhp. 0-62mph is sorted in 3.7s - two-tenths off the pace of the equivalent combustion-powered M4 Competition.

Then there’s the eDrive35 (282bhp) and eDrive40 (335bhp) starter packs, which come with more effective silicon carbide bits on their batteries. As such, energy consumption drops by 4.5 per cent on each to unlock an extra 14 miles of juice. That’s now 316 miles between recharges for the 35, while the 40 gets a much fruitier 377 miles.

Pricing starts at £51k for the 35 before winding up to £71k for the M60. That’s still 20 grand cheaper than an M4, mind.

 
The 2026 BMW i4 is faster than ever and it even goes farther

BMW is giving its most popular electric car a serious boost for the 2026 model year. The updated i4 arrives with a little bit more range and a decent jump in power for the performance model, now known as the i4 M60. Going into production in November, the changes focus on making the already great electric sedan even more competitive.

The secret to the increased driving range is a silicon carbide (SiC) inverters. An inverter is the bit that manages the power moving from the high-voltage battery to the electric motors. By using SiC parts, which are tougher and more resistant to heat than older silicon parts, the energy transfer becomes much cleaner and more efficient.

The base model i4 eDrive40 sees its estimated range now pushing past the 483 km mark on a full charge. The eDrive40 with 18-inch wheels offers an impressive estimated 536 km of range - a 15-mile improvement over the previous model. Even with the larger 19-inch wheels, the range is an estimated 494 km.

The range gains are great news for everyday commuters, but top of the lineup getting a big dose of extra muscle. BMW renamed the performance version from i4 M50 to i4 M60 to reflect its new capabilities.

The M60 now starts up with 510 hp, which is a solid 41 hp more than the old M50. When the driver selects the Sport setting, the power jumps all the way to 593 hp - an extra boost of 57 hp. This extra muscle helps the i4 M60 to rocket from a standstill to 97 km/h in just 3.6 seconds.

Thankfully, the power upgrade on the i4 M60 did not hurt its efficiency. Thanks to the same SiC inverters found in the entry-level model, the M60 also gets a small range bump. The M60 with 19-inch wheels offers an estimated 447 km of range, an 11-mile gain. If you choose the aggressive 20-inch wheels, the range settles at 373 km, still a 5-mile improvement.

The 2-strong BMW i4 portfolio in South Africa has been quietly adjusted, with these latest changes coming approximately a year after the facelifted version of this fully electric fastback (which technically features the Gran Coupé body) touched down on local soil.

Thanks to the ever-vigilant folks over at duoporta.com, we know BMW Group SA has revised its G26-series i4 line-up, handing the eDrive35 M Sport derivative a little extra range and replacing the M50 xDrive with a new M60 xDrive flagship.

Now priced at R1 500 000 (an increase of R153 500), the i4 eDrive35 M Sport gains silicon carbide semi-conductor components in its power electronics, which the Munich-based brand says reduces consumption “by around 4.5%”. The claimed single-charge range from the 67 kWh (net) battery pack thus increases from 483 km to 502 km.

As before, the i4 eDrive35’s rear axle is powered by an integrated electric motor generating peak outputs of 210 kW and 400 Nm, facilitating a 0-100 kph sprint in a claimed 6.0 seconds and a top speed of 190 kph.

Meanwhile, the i4 M50 xDrive falls away, replaced by the new i4 M60 xDrive. Priced at R1 750 000, the fresh all-wheel-drive flagship derivative comes at a R55 000 premium over its predecessor, though it offers even more oomph.

Yes, the i4 M60 xDrive boasts peak power of 442 kW (up 42 kW compared with the M50 xDrive), while maximum torque is unchanged at 795 Nm. That added power sees the claimed 0-100 kph time improve from 3.9- to 3.7 seconds. Top speed is again 225 kph, while the listed single-charge range from the 81 kWh (net) battery pack comes in at 538 km.
