Got a '05 320d which is still in Motorplan.

Well since the Motorplan is in the previous owner's name - does that cause any problem at all?
Or do I just call up and book the car in with my name.

Nothing wrong with the car, just wanna have it run through by the technicians.

The motor plan shouldn't be a problem - it is car based afaik, but you can only take in the car if one of the service lights indicate that a specific condition-based service is due e.g. brakes, oil etc. or if there is a warning light.

I don't think they will otherwise have a look without charging you.

Thanks for the reply.

Got a friend that works at a BMW dealership that could likely hook me up.
Will just tune them that the turbo's making a funny noise or something :p

Be prepared for a little hassle. The Motorplan is supposed to be transferred to the new owner's name upon resale. Expect them to want to charge you a substantial amount to do this...

Reason being when a BMW is sold as 'used', it is meant to go through a full quality check to ensure that all Motorplan guidelines have been adhered to and that the car is still in original condition re both repairs & modifications. If you bought the car from a dealership, someone didn't do his/her job...

And yes, I worked for BMW at a stage ;)

they will charge about R900 (might be less) for a 24 point check before transferring the motor-plan to your name ... its not a big hassle ... else you can just leave the car on the previous owners name on BMW's system and save R900

How is it that the motorplan is not in your name? That implies that the car itself is not in your name either?

Nope... BMW internal system vs eNatis government registration system. The two aren't related at all.

Car was purchased at a non-BMW dealership as it came in as a trade and I took it off the floor again.

Hehe - been waiting for a nice day (and the time to do it with) to take some nice pics. :)

Fair enough. :)

Some advice for people buying privately or from non-BMW dealers-: always specify this in your OTP: "sale subject to transfer of motorplan into my name". This serves two purposes:

1) You don't have to pay
2) You don't get caught out if the car has been accident repaired by a non-BMW approved panel-beater. In such a case, the MP will be cancelled at the next service, leaving you seriously out of pocket.

You can actually call BMW and ask them the damage + ownership history before paying over the cash. Useful facility.

+1 ... applies to many cars on mplan ... but just be aware that some people have repaired cars and motorplan has never picked it up, or even commented as such on their systems ...

Hi guys, should open a new thread but anyway, sent my newly purchased used 05 323i in for a once over to Lyndhurst BM. this was last Tuesday, they say that the gear box will need replacing and only today have stripped it in order for a rep from BM SA to have a look and authorize the new box. The car is still in motor plan and but out of the two year warranty. Shouldn't BM not provide a courtesy car for the time they have the car exceeding a period of time? I spoke to the after sales lady and she says that they provide them on a discretionary basis. Odd that after looking for a car still in warranty and motor plan I am still being jerked around!! Any suggestions? I dont mind being without the car, but I would like to have a way of getting to work in the mean time.
