BMW X2 M35i (2018) Specs & Price Announced

German carmaker BMW has revealed the X2 M35i - a performance version of the stylish X2 crossover. Herewith, some details as well as how much it costs.

The new BMW X2 M35i is powered by the most powerful 4-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine offered by the brand. It offers up 225 kW and 450 Nm, which is sufficient to fling the stylish SUV to 100 kph in a claimed 4.9 seconds. Power goes to all four wheels via BMW's 8-speed Steptronic gearbox, which also features launch control. BMW claims a fuel economy figure of 7.4 L/100 km.

It's not just a powerful engine and some sporty kit fitted to the BMW X2 M35i. Speaking of sporty kit, you'll be able to spot the X2 M35i with its sporty front bumper with large intakes, unique mirrors, large exhausts and unique 19-inch alloy wheels. The real detail is in the performance upgrades, however. There is a remap on the gearbox, with a focus on performance as well as an M Sport suspension. You can also option adaptive suspension, which will likely be well worth forking out for. There's also an M Sport differential fitted to the front axle and bigger M Sport brakes have been fitted.

The BMW X2 M35i goes into global production in November 2018 and we'll see the first units arrive in South Africa in the first quarter of 2019. We have discovered that the vehicle is available to order on the BMW SA website.

SA pricing for new BMW X2 M35i flagship released

The new BMW X2 M35i flagship is scheduled to arrive in South Africa in the first quarter of 2019. But the local arm of the Munich-based brand has already published pricing on its website.

According to BMW SA’s configurator, the X2 M35i will be priced from R815 172.

It will run on 19-inch double-spoke alloys as standard, with a set of 20-inch items (R14 400) offered as one of many optional extras.

As a reminder, the X2 M35i draws its urge from the most powerful turbocharged 2,0-litre four-cylinder engine the brand has yet to offer. It delivers 225 kW and 450 N.m to all four corners via an eight-speed automatic transmission that includes launch control. That’s enough, says the automaker, for a zero to 100 km/h sprint of 4,9 seconds.

The new model’s grille features a Cerium Grey surround, with the cooling inlets and side-mirror caps finished in the same hue. Round back, you’ll find an M spoiler and a pair of large tailpipes (each measuring 100 mm in diameter).

BMW says the X2 M35i’s M Sport suspension system has also been “specifically tuned and adapted” to match the vehicle’s personality (an adaptive arrangement offering two manually switchable modes will be optionally available). Meanwhile, the steering has been updated to ostensibly provide improved levels of feel and precision.

There’s also a locking differential installed in the front axle gear, while the M Sport braking system boasts fixed callipers in Dark Blue metallic (with 18-inch steel discs at the front with 17-inch items at the rear). Inside, you’ll find an M Sport leather steering wheel with shift paddles and door entry trims up front bearing the lettering “M35i”.

BMW X2 sDrive20i 2018 review

Should I buy one?

To its credit, the BMW X2 takes a good shot as dispelling the idea that crossovers have to be inherently worse than the hatchbacks on which they’re usually based. Not only does the X2 look rather sharp, it drives well and has comparable levels of practicality to, say, a 1 Series (its boot has 470 litres of space versus 360 litres in the hatch).

The more sceptical among us might view BMW’s ability to seemingly pull new vehicle niches out of thin air in a negative light. At least - in the case of the X2, anyway - when it does, BMW does a pretty good job of it.

Pricing! BMW X2 sDrive20d quietly added to SA range

BMW South Africa has quietly expanded its X2 rangefrom five to six derivatives, adding a new sDrive20d model to the line-up.

As with other X2 variants in the local range, the new front-wheel-drive turbodiesel derivative is offered in M Sport and M Sport X trim. The former will cost you R649 444 while the latter will start at R679 344.

The sDrive20d employs the Munich-based firm’s 2,0-litre, four-cylinder oil-burning unit, which sends 140 kW (at 4 000 r/min) and 400 N.m (from 1 750 to 2 250 r/min) to the front wheels via an eight-speed automatic transmission from ZF.

This engine is, of course, shared with the all-paw X2 xDrive20d we tested in 2018. For the record, the all-wheel-drive model commands a R50 947 premium over the new front-driven version, regardless of which trim level is selected.

As a reminder, the local X2 range kicks off with the 103 kW/220 N.m sDrive18i model (from R577 903 in manual) and tops out with the 225 kW/450 N.m M35i flagship (for R815 172).

Yes, now that average property prices have increased, car prices have taken over that slot.

I was actually referring to the front wheel drive portion highlighted in the quote, like blasphemy for BMW.

However I must digress,I completely agree with your sentiment, car prices have just become ridiculous lately indeed.

New BMW X2 M35i arrives in South Africa boasting 225 kw

Back in October 2018, we brought you local pricing for the new BMW X2 M35i. And now this fiery flagship of the X2 range has officially arrived in South Africa.

Priced from R815 172, the M35i-badged model draws its urge from the most powerful turbocharged 2,0-litre four-cylinder engine the German brand has yet to offer. It delivers 225 kW and 450 N.m to all four corners via an eight-speed automatic transmission that includes launch control. That’s enough, says the automaker, for a zero to 100 km/h sprint of 4,9 seconds.

The Munich-based firm says the standard M Sport suspension system has been “specifically tuned” for the hottest X2, with an optional adaptive arrangement offering two manually adjustable modes. There’s also an M Sport differential installed in the front axle gear.

The braking system, too, has been upgraded for the X2 M35i, with fixed callipers (painted Dark Blue metallic) and 18-inch steel discs up the front. The new model’s grille features a Cerium Grey surround, with the cooling inlets and side-mirror caps finished in the same hue. Round back, you’ll find an M spoiler and a pair of large tailpipes (each measuring 100 mm in diameter).

BMW's most furious four-pot: 225kW X2 M35i hits SA

The performance version of BMW’s X2 crossover is now on sale in South Africa and you can make it yours for R809 100.

The X2 M35i’s claim to fame is that it’s the most powerful four-cylinder production BMW to date, and also the brawniest model to be based on the company’s ULK front-wheel-drive platform that originated beneath the Mini. In fact, in output terms it foretells more exciting things to come from the John Cooper Works garage, starting with the new GP, which Mini promises will have more than 220kW.

And that’s already the case for this high-riding BMW hatch, the X2 M35i producing 225kW between 5000 and 6250rpm, and 450Nm from 1750. That’s enough, in the kingdom of manufacturer claims, to get you from zero to 100km/h in 4.9 seconds - providing you’ve activated Launch Control.

As the first four-cylinder engine to be breathed upon by the M Performance division, this engine produces as much power as BMW’s original 3-litre turbopetrol six and has a completely redesigned cooling system.

Power goes to all four wheels through an eight-speed automatic gearbox and xDrive all-wheel-drive system, while model-specific M Sport suspension, steering and braking systems ensure the necessary corner-carving agility and stopping power. Another ULK platform first is the M Sport Differential installed in the front axle gear to reduce traction losses on the front wheels.

To me, the interior of the X2 already looks dated. Maybe it's because I've seen the new 3 series interior. I suppose that dashboard layout has also been seen on many other BMW products.

BMW X2 M35i 2019 review

Should I buy one?

The X2 M35i is not the sort of car BMW M should really excel at. Yet despite its obvious drawbacks, including its transversely mounted engine and comparatively high ride height, it’s a remarkably good package.

As an alternative to the Audi SQ2 and a growing number of performance-based crossovers, it has a lot going for it. It’s swift and refined, and responsive and enjoyable to drive. Its upgraded interior also imparts of a level of quality and the sort of upmarket feel that is missing on other X2 models.

It might not be an obvious choice and is not exactly a bargain, but those in the market for an all-season hot hatch should at least give it consideration.
