BMW X2 M35i Edition GoldPlay (2022): Price & Specs

Prefer your BMW X2 M35i with not-so-subtle Galvanic Gold highlights and a smattering of extra kit? Step this way to meet the X2 Edition GoldPlay, which is now available to order in South Africa…

BMW South Africa has quietly added a new special-edition version of the X2 to its local configurator, with the Edition GoldPlay package exclusively available in M35i guise.

According to the Munich-based firm’s local website, the X2 M35i Edition GoldPlay commands a R20 000 premium over the derivative on which it’s based, which takes the starting price to R960 481 (though the configurator currently forces the selection of the otherwise optional Navigation Plus and Remote Services – likely related to the semiconductor shortage – thus pushing the total to R986 937).

So, what do you get for the extra R20 000? Well, the most obvious addition is the Galvanic Gold foil wrapping along the X2’s flanks, which BMW promises will attract “maximum attention on any road”. This vivid hue is repeated on the kidney grille surround and side-mirror caps, as well as on sections of the likewise-included 20-inch M aerodynamic wheels.

In South Africa, these highlights can be combined with a choice of seven exterior paint colours, including two extra-cost options. If you’re a local rugby fan, we wouldn’t blame you for selecting Sanremo Green metallic – a hue reserved for this special edition – as you’d end up with an X2 effectively sporting Springbok colours, as pictured above.

How much does the BMW X2 M35i Edition GoldPlay cost in SA?

The BMW X2 M35i Edition GoldPlay ships with a 2-year/unlimited kilometre warranty and a 5-year/100 000 km maintenance plan.

BMW X2 xDrive 25e review: a sporty hybrid crossover

What are the BMW X2 PHEV’s rivals?

Stuff like the Volvo XC40 PHEV and Mercedes GLA 250e. What these hybrids all do in 2022 however, is pose an important question – are you ready for a full EV?

The battery on the hybrid is small and takes 3-4 hours (depending on whether you’ve got a BMW wallbox or a humble plug socket) to recharge, and as mentioned it’s quite heavy, too.

But on the flip side, it’s got a combustion engine, so range anxiety will never be an issue. You can programme the car – or do it yourself – to run the engine on long hauls and save the battery for the city, so you’re never left short.

Whether that’s still a boon now that electric cars are getting more and more range will dictate how you feel about this one.

BMW X2 review

WHAT'S THE VERDICT?

“Manages to serve up a zingy new style that hardly compromises its space or usefulness”

It's getting on a bit now and due an update, and the lack of a fully electrified version makes the case for this even harder. That said, it's still good to drive, and decently made and equipped. On top of that it manages to serve up a zingy new style that hardly compromises its space or usefulness. OK, so we'd still have a 320i Touring, but the rest of the world can't get enough of BMW's crossovers and this shows why.

Next generation BMW X2 set for complete design reinvention

BMW X1's style-focused sibling is being readied for another outing, with EV option possible

Prototypes of the second-generation BMW X2 have been spied for the first time ahead of a UK launch for the coupé-SUV during the first half of 2024.

As with today's car, the new X2 will be based on the highly popular X1 – itself recently launched in third-generation form – but seemingly with a radical design rethink aimed at bringing it into line with BMW's larger coupé-roofed SUVs, the X4 and X6.

The current car is defined by its relatively straight-backed silhouette, and is unique in the BMW line-up, notably, for featuring a chunky C-pillar with the brand's emblem mounted prominently at the centre. This new model moves away from that completely, adopting a profile that leans much more obviously on traditional coupé design cues - with a steep sloping roofline and a subtle lip at the rear, hinting at a more dynamic billing than the X1.

At this early stage, it's unclear whether BMW plans to offer an electric version of the X2, but such a move is possible, given the car sits on the same FAAR platform as the smaller X1 which itself has an electric sibling in the form of the iX1.

Next-generation BMW X2 to arrive with electric iX2 sibling

BMW X1's style-focused sibling is being readied for 2023 launch, with EV option confirmed

BMW has confirmed the BMW X2 will be launched at the end of 2023, arriving with an electric iX2 variant as the German firm continues to ramp up its EV product range.

As with today's car, the new X2 will be based on the highly popular X1 – itself recently launched in third-generation form – but seemingly with a radical design rethink aimed at bringing it into line with BMW's larger coupé-roofed SUVs, the BMW X4 and BMW X6.

The current car is defined by its relatively straight-backed silhouette and is unique in the BMW line-up, notably for featuring a chunky C-pillar with the brand's emblem mounted prominently at the centre. This new model moves away from that completely, adopting a profile that leans much more obviously on traditional coupé design cues - with a steep sloping roofline and a subtle lip at the rear, hinting at a more dynamic billing than the X1.

Confirmed by BMW charman Oliver Zipse at the German car maker's annual conference this morning, the cars will be launched at the end of 2023, with first UK deliveries expected at the start of next year.

BMW teases the iX2 in a short video

On its official Instagram account, BMW teased its upcoming crossover, which should span the X2 ICE model and the iX2 EV. The company confirmed that it's working on a fully-electric iX2 SUV earlier this year, so it makes sense for the company to announce the duo very soon.

The teaser itself shows the vehicle rotating and reveals the profile and much of the front appearance. The iX2 will likely adopt a grille that's similar to the X6, but with slightly different proportions and C-shaped daytime running lights.

BMW teases the iX2 in Fortnite

The BMW X2 series is about to debut next week and we've already seen a short teaser from the company's Instagram page. Today's teaser is a bit more extensive, though, and quite unorthodox too.

BMW has built an entire island in Fortnite with lots of easter eggs scattered throughout the island. The easter eggs include BMW's iconic four-cylinder headquarters building, BMW Welt and the BMW Museum. There's also the BMW iX2, which you can customize after completing certain challenges. You can apply different paint jobs, change the rims or stuff the trunk with various contents.

To get to the island, you need to go to Hypnopolis and enter the following island code: 3541-0917-2429. You will find the first ever car creator in the game and BMW says it has created the entire island on its own without any help from Epic Games.

BMW's Next Car Launch Is Happening In Fortnite

Want to configure an iX2? You'll need to hop into Epic's metaverse

For a long time now, Epic has been pushing Fortnite has more than a game. It’s the metaverse, it’s a platform, it’s where all of culture is going to happen from here on out. Other companies, it seems, are buying into the idea — at least BMW is, by debuting its new compact crossovers on a custom in-game island.

The new iX2 electric crossover is coming October 11, but that doesn’t mean BMW hasn’t built a configurator for it. Instead, there’s a build tool for the car’s camouflaged teaser design — one that can only be accessed through BMW’s homebrew Fortnite island, called Hypnopolis.

BMW iX2 to make world premiere at Japan Mobility Show 2023

Amid the neon glow and bustling streets of Tokyo, BMW is ready to pull back the curtain at the 2023 Japan Mobility Show to reveal a trailblazing vision for the future. Touted as a frontrunner, the world debut of the BMW iX2 is bound to electrify conversations.

Once the Tokyo Motor Show, this year’s event will be the backdrop for BMW's compact Sports Activity Coupe (SAC), the BMW X2, and its electric counterpart iX2. While some might argue that the BMW Vision Neue Klasse, which will enjoy its Asian premiere just weeks after debuting in Munich, will steal the limelight, the iX2 is more of a here and now product.

The iX2 will stand alongside an already comprehensive electric lineup – the BMW iX1, BMW i4, the all new BMW i5, BMW iX, the China-only BMW i3 and the grand BMW i7 luxury sedan which we just recently reviewed. Heck, if you are in Tokyo and stroll a little further down the exhibition halls, you'd even spot the just-released BMW i7 M70 xDrive, which flaunts the title of the "most potent all-electric BMW."

What can we expect from the BMW iX2? Well, the brand's keeping mum, with all juicy details set for release on 11 October 2023. But you can bet your last dollar (or yen) that once the details flood in, we’ll be all over them.

All-new BMW X2 teased ahead of October 11 reveal, outputs confirmed

BMW is getting ready to pull the covers off its all-new X2 and its latest teaser gives us a peek at the range-topping M35i version.

BMW confirmed on its YouTube channel that the new X2 crossover would be revealed to the world on Wednesday, October 11.

The brand also launched a teaser site for the new model, confirming that the M35i flagship model will offer 221kW, which is 4kW down on the current version.

BMW claims it’ll sprint from 0-100km/h in 5.4 seconds, which is 0.6 seconds slower than the current version.

Its output and acceleration figures do however match the recently announced BMW X1 M35i, and interestingly the latter offers a bit more power, to the tune of 233kW, in select markets such as the US. This will likely apply to the X2 version as well, while regions such as Europe remain at 221kW for emissions compliance.
