Manhart Pump BMW X3 M Competition Up To 630 HP (470 KW)

BMW commenced production on the new X3 M and X4 M SUV’s in April this year but one tuner from Germany has already managed to get its hands on one to give it a little more grunt.

Manhart Performance is no stranger to cranking up BMW’s and now the X3 M Competition gets some treatment and is names MHX3 600. The twin-turbocharged inline-six 3.0-litre no longer produces the stock 510 hp as the tuner has been able to generate a potent 630 hp (470 kW). Peak torque for the S58 engine has also increased subnationally from 600 Nm to 785 Nm.

Should I buy one?

Many likely will, given the growing popularity of performance SUVs, but it is a niche that’s filled with more flamboyant rivals. The X3, by comparison, feels a little sterile.

It certainly isn’t left wanting for pace, but ride and handling exist in a middle ground between the dynamism of Alfa’s Stelvio Quadrifoglio and the everyday refinement of Jaguar’s F-Pace SVR. The soundtrack is also no match for a GLC 63’s snarling V8.

If there can be such a thing as a true driver’s SUV, this is surely it, and those who get behind the wheel will find it delivers an experience that’s largely free from compromise – albeit one that doesn’t entertain in quite the same way as the competition.

Stock BMW X3 M Competition Produces 542 HP (404 KW) On A Dyno

The BMW X3 M Competition and X4 M Competition have started arriving in South Africa ahead of its official launch at the 2019 BMW M Festival and it seems it has a little trick up its sleeve.

When it leaves the factory, BMW claims the X3 M Competition (and X4 M Competition) produces 503 hp (475 kW) and 600 Nm of torque from a new twin-turbo 3.0-litre six-cylinder. Well, it seems they were quite conservative, at least according to a dyno run by IND.

It ended up producing 491 horses (366 kW) and 446 pound-feet (605 Nm) of torque at the wheels “on measly 89 Octane.”

BMW is hosting its second M Festival at the Kyalami Grand Prix Circuit on 26 - 27 October 2019 and our very own Gero Lilleike attended the media day this week to sample the brand’s latest M products on track.

Local BMW fans are in for a treat at the second-ever M Festival which is taking place at Kyalami Grand Prix Circuit this weekend, 26-27 October 2019, where the public will be able to view and test drive various BMW products while also being entertained with music, food and activities for the whole family.

We had the opportunity to attend the media day which marks the start of the festival and sampled a range of new M products which are now on offer in South Africa.

BMW X3 / X4 M Competition in SA

The first M Competition versions of the X3 and X4 are now available in South Africa! Note that our market will not receive the X3 M and X4 M.

Both the X3 M Competition and X4 M Competition are powered by a new 3.0-litre, straight-6 twin-turbocharged engine developing 375 kW and 600 Nm. Power is directed to all four wheels via an 8-speed automatic transmission. Acceleration from zero to 100 kph is claimed at 4.1 seconds with a top speed of 280 kph when you opt for the optional Drivers Package.

Marc Marquez Wins BMW X4 M Competition Making That Seven In A Row

Around this time last year, MotoGP rider Marc Marquez received a brand new BMW M3 CS as a reward for his immense season in the 2018 MotoGP championship. Just last week, the 26-year-old rider received another prize in the form of a new X4 M Competition.

Dahler Take BMW X3 M And X4 M Up To 610 HP (449 KW)

We have already seen Manhart take the BMW X3 M Competition up to 630 horses (470 kW) but now its Dahler’s turn with both the X3 M and X4 M (in regular and Competition variants).

In its standard form, the unit delivers 480 hp (353 kW) and 600 Nm of torque in non-Competition guises while the Competition delivers 510 hp (375 kW) and the same amount of torque at peak.

Dahler can boost both variants of the performance SUV’s to a very respectful 610 hp (449 kW) and 760 Nm. They are also promising a Stage 2 package is in the works which will take things even further.

Standard BMW X3 M too tame? Tuner pushes peak power to 449 kW!

Think the BMW X3 M Competition is a little tame? Well, Swiss tuner DÄHLer has just released its package for the hot SUV (which can also be applied to the X4 M), bumping up peak power and making some revisions to the exhaust and chassis.

Using BMW’s S58 twin-turbocharged 3,0-litre straight-six as a base, DÄHLer has increased peak outputs from the standard 353 kW (or 375 kW if you're taking about the Competition model) and 600 N.m to 449 kW and 760 N.m. The top speed limiter has been removed, too, which means the upgraded X3 M can hit 300 km/h.

Having had a short spin in the BMW X3 M Competition around Kyalami recently one thing it is not lacking is get up and go but the folks over at AC Schnitzer have other ideas for the M SUV.

The X3 M Competition leaves the factory with 510 hp (380 kW) as standard, but now the twin-turbocharged 3.0-litre straight-six engine produces 592 hp (441 kW) and 700 Nm of torque. That equates to gains of 89 hp (66 kW) and 100 Nm. Unfortunately, AC Schnitzer did not inform us as to what these gains do to the performance figures but you can bet they will improve.

German firm AC Schnitzer has unveiled a fresh tuning package for the BMW X3 M Competition, handing the performance SUV extra power, an aerodynamic kit and interior modifications.

The tuned X3 M Competition’s 3,0-litre twinturbo-petrol inline-six has been tweaked to produce a whopping 441 kW and 700 N.m (up from 375 kW and 600 N.m), which is sent to all four corners via BMW’s rear-biased xDrive all-wheel-drive system.

BMW X3 M cranked up to 441kW by AC Schnitzer

If you want the kind of dynamite you get in an X5 M but in a smaller package, German tuner AC Schnitzer has just the thing for you.

The latest BMW M product to get the Schnitzer boost is the X3 M Competition, and as is customary, a trio of engine, suspension and aesthetic modifications is being offered.

Let’s start with the power. The standard X3 M Competition is good for 375kW and 600Nm, but with AC Schnitzer’s performance upgrade the 3-litre six-cylinder turbopetrol engine now churns out 441kW and 700Nm. That’s the same power output as the standard X5 M, and not far off the 460kW Competition version. The tuner didn’t specify exactly what it did to liberate these extra ponies, but the results are impressive nonetheless.

To mitigate the reliability fears that come with engine upgrades, AC is also offering a warranty of up to four years with this vehicle.

Moving on to the chassis upgrades, AC Schnitzer is offering a spring kit that lowers the car by up to 25mm.
