BMW X7 (2019) International Launch Review

Verdict

Nobody will buy the BMW X7 to go seriously off-road, or to drive it hard on a race circuit, but BMW’s own standards demanded that its largest SUV had to cope with extremes and maintain the driving dynamics that has made its badge one that signifies this is a car people will want to drive. Thankfully, it doesn’t appear to have compromised on a high-quality and spacious cabin in that pursuit. The X7 deserves its billing as top SUV dog in the BMW line-up, that’s for sure.

BMW X7 2019 review

Should I buy one?

Judged against its distant-markets mission of carrying plenty in luxury and with lightly glitzy presence, the X7 does its job well.

It’s far from the most elegant or imaginatively designed BMW and it’s really too big for many British roads (and car parks) but if you need that much sumptuously-presented space, then shortlist it.

Where does it sit?

It’s a little difficult to discern the X7’s exact purpose BMW’s already comprehensive SUV line-up. While it’s Range Rover-rivalling in size, the X7 is no dirt tracker, unless the optional off-roading package is specified, and it’s not the last word in dynamic handling, either. Perhaps the best summation would be to see it as a means for well-off family toting kids and associated trappings to side step the MPV option and go for something with a bit more street cred.

BMW X7 xDrive30d M Sport 2019 UK review

Should I buy one?

If you really must have an SUV the size of a small county, by all means buy an X7. If you can see past the design (hell, you might even quite like it), there’s very little about the way it drives that will cause grave concern. The fact that it can genuinely fit seven adults in relative comfort is also a neat trick in a world of so-called ‘seven-seaters’ that can only really take children – and small ones at that – in the third row.

Where the X7 does feel a touch disappointing, though, is inside. Don’t get us wrong, it’s impeccably finished and the materials used are wonderful to the touch. But so too are those you’ll find in the X5. In fact, there’s very little that really differentiates the two, at least architecturally speaking. It’s all a bit too derivative. And in the world of flagship luxury SUVs, a world where you could easily spend more than £90,000 once you’ve added a few options, that seems like something of a missed opportunity.

BMW gives X5 and X7 the M50i treatment (plus SA pricing!)

BMW has revealed two new M Performance models, giving its X5 and X7 the M50i treatment. Both of these V8-powered SUVs have already been confirmed for South Africa.

The new X5 M50i and the X7 M50i (joining M50d variants in the respective ranges) will be produced from August 2019 at the Munich-based firm’s plant in Spartanburg in the United States, with their local introductions scheduled for October 2019.

So, how much are you looking at here? Well, the BMW X5 M50i will start from R1 511 689, while the BMW X7 M50i will kick off at R1 871 542.

Both employ the automaker’s latest twin-turbo 4,4-litre V8 petrol unit, worth 390 kW and 750 N.m (the latter from 1 800 all the way through to 4 600 r/min). In the case of the X5 M50i, this translates to a zero to 100 km/h sprint in a claimed 4,3 seconds, with the heavier X7 M50i taking some four-tenths longer.

The V8 engine is combined with the firm’s xDrive all-wheel-drive system, eight-speed Steptronic sports transmission, M sports differential, M sport exhaust system and model-specific suspension technology. The X5 M50i is equipped with adaptive M suspension, while the X7 M50i benefits from adaptive dual-axle air suspension (also available optionally for the former).

MW adds mighty M50i engine to X5 and X7

BMW South Africa confirmed that it will be launching a petrol engine for the X5 and X7 SUV range. The German carmaker also confirmed pricing for the 2 SUVs when they touchdown in October 2019.

As you read this, the only engines available for the X5 and soon-to-be-launched X7 are a brace of diesels. While both the 30d and M50d powerplants are impressive in their own right, petrol fans can claim to be left out. However, BMW SA has announced the arrival of an M50i petrol engine, which will be made available for both the X5 and X7 later this year.

BMW X5 and X7 perked up with 390kW M50i models - we have SA pricing

BMW is upping the performance ante in its X5 and X7 line-ups with new M50i models powered by the Bavarian automaker’s potent new 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 that also recently made its debut in the 5 Series and 8 Series.

Both will be available in South Africa from October this year, with the X5 M50i set to retail at R1 511 689 and the X7 M50i for R1 871 542.

The new V8 produces 390kW between 5500 and 6000rpm, as well as 750Nm between 1800 and 4600rpm. This is enough, says BMW, to shift the X5 M50i from 0-100km/h in 4.3 seconds and the X7 M50i in 4.7 seconds - just remember to activate Launch Control.

50kW and 100Nm more potent than the previous-generation V8, the engine has received a thorough makeover, from the crankshaft right up to the head, while the turbochargers now sit in the ‘V’ between the cylinder banks. Engineers also paid attention to the outlet, with a standard M Sport exhaust system said to deliver an exciting soundtrack.

BMW X7 (2019) Launch Review

Should you buy one?

The luxury SUV market is booming and will do so for some time to come. BMW's first attempt at making an ultra-luxurious 7-seat SUV is more than respectable... in fact, we think the Bavarian brand has nailed the product brief. The majority of its X7 units will be sold in the United States and China, which gives you an indication of the newcomer's target market: clients who want the utmost luxury, refinement and a status symbol, and we think BMW's first go at tackling the market dominated by the Mercedes-Benz GLS is commendable. Given the fact the X7 has reached the market before the recently-updated GLS, means the Mercedes-Benz is going to need something quite special if it's to match Munich's offering.

Granted, that bold and imposing front-end styling is not to everyone's taste, but we like it for that very reason. Pricing for the BMW X7 is particularly interesting. Officially, BMW claims its X7 is the 7 Series of the SUV world, but when you consider where the 1st-class sedan sits in the pricing hierarchy, it makes you wonder why customers wouldn't default to an X7. An entry-level BMW 7-Series comes in at R1 645 990, which you can compare to the pricing of the X7 below. With additional seating, xDrive and more space, the X7 makes a compelling alternative to its sedan sibling.

BMW X7 launched in SA - here's what you get as standard

If you want your BMW Sports Activity Vehicle supersized then you might want to set your sights on the first-ever X7, which has just touched down in South Africa, only months after its international launch.

The 5151mm long X7 takes pride of place as the flagship of BMW’s X range, and it can seat seven occupants in reasonable comfort, although that does not leave too much of a boot, which swallows just 326 litres when all seats are in place.

The X7 will initially be offered in two variants in the form of an xDrive30d, at R1 554 500, and M50d, at R1 853 200. The 30d is powered by BMW’s familiar 3-litre turbodiesel six, rated at 195kW and 620Nm, and the M50d gets the far mightier quad-turbo version of that engine, which is good for 294kW and 760Nm. The M50d will screech from 0-100km/h in 5.4 seconds, BMW says, while its 30d counterpart should take seven seconds flat.

But if for some reason those diesels don’t satisfy your performance appetite, there is a V8 powered M50i coming in October this year with a price tag of R1 871 542.

All engines are mated to an eight-speed automatic gearbox and xDrive all-wheel-drive system with variable torque distribution, and all models get adaptive air suspension on both axles. The system lowers the car at highway speeds and can also raise it for off-road driving. On that note, the X7 can be ordered with an Off-Road package (R27 600) that brings additional underguard trim and a terrain management system with four selectable modes.

Verdict

Business class luxury on four wheels: that is what BMW aimed to achieve with its new, flagship SUV. The X7 boasts with a generous amount of standard specification, plenty of on-road presence and, when needed, some off-road capability.

And the X7 M50d in particular? Well, this derivative is a kilometre-munching six-seater. Thanks to its quad-turbo inline-six, the M50d will be comfortable transporting its owner's prized horses to the races or crossing the country, and then some. Wherever the destination may be, X7 owners can rest assured they will feel as though they have "arrived".
