Bonus vs 13th cheque

As 2013 draws to a close, many employees will be salivating at the prospect of receiving their bonus or thirteenth cheque - but are they guaranteed?

13th cheque is more often than not a trick used by certain companies to make lower-level employees feel better, especially around Christmas/holiday time with their expenses. Makes the employer appear generous. Most people still seem to budget monthly (very shortsighted) whereas organisational budgets are annual, so it's easy to plan for this - just pay 1/13th of annual salary every month, and double up on anniversary / birthday month / Christmas.

Some employees prefer to get their full salary every month, not with a thirteenth shaved off.

Bonus is another matter.

This is an HR nightmare. I really dread this time of year, we don't get a 13th cheque or a guaranteed bonus but employees expect it. When they get a bonus and it isn't a full 13th cheque they freak out, I also only get a % bonus but I am just happy to get something to help with Christmas shopping. My next job with not include HR duties I can tell you that much.

I get both. And both are guaranteed.
Just the bloody taxman is completely nuts this time of the year.

Bonus time is coming and I've got no idea how it's going to play out. it's a new company for me.

It's not decided on a whim exactly. It's performance based on the company's profits and the employee's PA.

Well our bonus is a bit like that except the personal portion isn't there. So we know about 90% we will get it, the 10% is a company disclaimer that it's still up to the board to pay or not, but we know if we make targets it's a sure thing.

I've not been with my company long enough to expect one.

Bonus, that is. No thirteenth cheque in my contract.

Not this year for me.
We've had to migrate with our parent company and if there's a bonus owed to us, along with salary increases - this now happens in March.
