Boot Camp - Definitely Beta software

Damn - I have set the weekend aside for that config - don't tell me I'm going to have trouble....!

All installed - bootcamp, WinXP Pro with 20gig partition, and Parallels picking it up fine in OSX. Did not have a single hassel. Luck of the draw..:)
and it all runs smoothly - even have b/tooth support in Bootcamp XP installation & Apple iSight. and running dual monitors & wireless network.

Now I can play some Bubbles... (just cause I had it registered under Win)

Um . . bubbles?

Here's a qn - if you install Kaspersky via parallels does it still work when you boot via bootcamp if you're sharing the same install?

I did not think of it again - installed AVG as all my machines run AVG. Will try it laterz.

bootcamp fried my apple Hard drive

fired it up, created partition, everything looked fine, then when windows installation came up it showed me a BLANK hard drive when it asked me to select the partition..

bottom line is it deleted my mac installation....

then i freaked and restarted PC without installing windows..

that was the last i saw of my mac :( wouldnt read the installation cd to install the OS again.. all my files were lost..

took it in for repairs, luckily it was still under warranty..

but the hard drive had to be replaced as bootcamp ruined it in some way or another..

this came from a certified apple technician so i didnt doubt what he said..

but anyways, got it back and now im too scared to try bootcamp again... so ill wait till 2moro for leopard which has a stable release of bootcamp..

and bootcamp will no longer work after 2moro just btw :p beta over..

Technically only the license expires with the release of leopard - as far as I can see there's no indication that Apple will cripple it immediately (if at all).

That said I'm not really bothered - only my mini has bootcamp and that's just so the missus can play CSI - I got HL2 today for the xbox so there's little chance she'll be getting near the tv to play her games :D

Sorry that it bricked your hdd though

lol no worries m8

as i said it was under warranty, luckily!

it was just irritating and im scared to go near that now! and its a shame cos it ran vista so nicely..

and my current pc is too low spec for vista :(

512mb ram
3ghz HT
radeon 9200 se! :( lol!

You have to boot with your Mac OS installation disk and then you can repair the disk with Disk Utility, or use Apple jack. Then start again.

You cant repair the disk while the OS is running, you have to be in "DOS" mode.

Dude! As if running Windows on your Mac isn't sacrilege, DOS?? :p

OK, to get serious, just to clarify. In the unix world, a filesystem has to be mounted read-only (something I wish I could do in Windows without some hardware intervention) to be able to run a filesystem check. That's why you have to boot from the CD to do it manually.

In the linux world, on certain filesystems, at least (there are several avalable under linux) you can create a file /forcefsck and reboot, and your filesystem will be checked before it is mounted read-write - quite useful. I'm still trying to figure out how to do this in OSX. Not that I've needed it, but I might just one day...

IIRC you can run various tasks (including fsck) from SUM but Applejack does a great job.

EDIT - by DOS mode Neio might have been referring to single user mode (SUM)

Right, so this just means that I can't use the assistant anymore I guess.

When does Boot Camp Beta expire?
As indicated in the license agreement for Boot Camp Beta, the Boot Camp Beta program expires when Mac OS 10.5 Leopard becomes available publicly in October, 2007.

Boot Camp Beta 1.2 or earlier expiration

The license to use Boot Camp Beta 1.2 or earlier expires on September 30, 2007 (2007-09-30). Boot Camp Assistant Beta will no longer open after expiration.

To continue using Boot Camp Beta for Microsoft Windows on your Intel-based Mac, you'll need to update to Boot Camp Beta 1.4, until Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard is available.
Boot Camp Beta 1.3, 1.4 expiration

The license to use Boot Camp Beta expires when Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard is available to the public. To continue using Boot Camp at that time, upgrade to Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard.

Important: Apple does not provide technical phone support for using Boot Camp Beta, burning the Macintosh Drivers CD, or installing Windows. Support is available on Apple's website. Fee-based support agreements are not available for Boot Camp Beta.
