Boy, 12, dies after falling through school ceiling

In primary school we used to slide down the stair railing when the teachers were not around. Thinking back, we could have been seriously injured if we lost our balance and fell .

I saw someone do this, lost their balance and fell down 2 flights backwards. It looked like he hit his neck and I thought to myself - "this guy just bought a ticket to a wheelchair" - but no, he got up, hobbled away and mumbled "ouch my foot".
I still don't understand it, but, good for him.

I recall sneaking into a building ceiling as a teenager. We knew not to just stand anywhere though. Even my 7 year old knows this.

tragic!!

but boys will be boys - I recall during gym class - back at Fairmont High school when it opened up in 1977 - I climb up the rope which was dangling from the ceiling at least 10m high right to the top - left a hand print on the ceiling. gym teacher never batted an eye lid!
I remember doing that too.

That kid was lucky. That's how it goes though, most kids will get away with trying out things, while one unlucky person won't make it.

I don't think you know what social justice means. It doesn't apply here. Kids are dumb that's why they need grownups to look after them. That's not an opinion, that's biology.
In grade 6 I was mountain biking across steep and dangerous rocks.

How much marshmallows do you need for the thorns of reality?

Kid's can be curious and adventurous and dumb. Best to limit the opportunities for them to accidentally kill themselves at school imo.
He shouldnt have had access to the stairs.

I can't help but feel that the school is responsible.
On the other hand you cannot protect kids/people from every single threat to their lives that the world has to offer. To attempt to do so would call into being an oppressive state that crushed any and all freedoms of choice. For everyone. And would create a population of the stupidest people in the history of mankind as it would remove the necessity for thought and caution completely. Nanny states, with the willing connivance of the courts are well on their way to doing this already. When a take away coffee joint has to label its products with a warning that it is hot and can burn you if spilled in your lap we might as well close the planet down.

But, there are also those who believe grown-ups need more grown-ups to look after them. its a dangerous world and people die. We need to understand that. Sure, look after your children, but remember this, sooner or later when you can no longer protect them (because they are 45 years old ok?) they are going to do all those things you forbade them to. Many of life's lessons need to be learned the hard way, and that has a cost. Its tragic. Its also life. The very definition of a terminal disease.
