Cape Town - A 12-year-old boy died when he fell through the ceiling in the hall of a Cape Town school.

Kyle Grace, a Grade 6 pupil at Edgemead Primary, was declared dead when paramedics arrived at the school on Thursday afternoon.

He accessed a staircase behind the stage and climbed into the ceiling, education MEC Debbie Schafer’s spokesperson Jessica Shelver said.

He fell about eight metres to his death.

“A full team from our district office left for the school immediately, including counsellors and psychologists. The incident has traumatised all concerned,” Shelver said on Friday.

Four school counsellors from a neighbouring school joined two district psychologists to provide counselling. More help would be provided as needed.

“This is an unspeakably tragic loss of such a young life. Our heartfelt condolences are with Kyle’s family at this very difficult time.”

Police spokesperson Sergeant Noloyiso Rwexana said an inquest docket was opened.

Oh dear, them old school designs...
Always wondered how one would get in there to change bulbs, etc..

What was he doing in the ceiling?

Shame. R.I.P.

Fccking around by the sound of it.

I used to climb around in the school hall celing when I was a sound and lighting geek. If I had fallen I reckon someone's career would have been over.

tragic!!

but boys will be boys - I recall during gym class - back at Fairmont High school when it opened up in 1977 - I climb up the rope which was dangling from the ceiling at least 10m high right to the top - left a hand print on the ceiling. gym teacher never batted an eye lid!

I'm expecting that they will blame the school for this 100%, and not the boy.

Kid's can be curious and adventurous and dumb. Best to limit the opportunities for them to accidentally kill themselves at school imo.
He shouldnt have had access to the stairs.

I can't help but feel that the school is responsible.

Sounds like a SJW speaking.

I behaved myself at school. Now at home and out and about was a different story, I could easily have fallen out of one of the numerous big trees I clambered around in (did once, broke arm), cut down all trees?

We used to climb into the ceiling in our school hall all the time.

My Brother-in-law once renovated a old Primary school in Meyerton. The original designer had looked ahead, and they had actually built a third floor, but put the roof up on it - the plan being at a later time to lift the roof and install the walls, etc. So the stars went up to the ceiling on the second floor (Or is it the first - I get confused) - through a door.
They had to do work in the ceiling void - so they unlocked that door for the day.

Obviously - they cordoned that area off - with the required warning signs. One kid, decided to ignore that, and go take a peek in the ceiling. The entire 'floor' of the void was concrete - except for a 2m by 1 m section over the stairwell itself.
Of course- the little brat stepped on that, fell halfway through and got stuck under his armpits. (Mercifully)

Everyone was in the school hall at the time, and so he hung there - screaming like a stuck pig, until the workmen found him. His parents threatened to sue - but the little **** had actually snuck out of assembly to go exploring, and the area was clearly demarcated.

Fahrkit, you are one special idiot. A KID lost his life, and you joke about it. Jeepers...............
Reminds me of a Trevor Noah skit, the notion of "too soon" is really quite subjective.

One can empathize while still having a genuinely dark / twisted sense of humour, offense is rarely intended.

Tragic. I cannot imagine what the parents must be going through. Im pretty sure the parents will blame the school, I would imagine in a situation like this one would want to blame someone even is it is completely irrational and unfair.
