We are going OT here, but Im not quite sure I agree. How can one show empathy with a distasteful comment such as that? Whether offence was intended or not does not make the comment less distasteful IMHO.

Ninja'd wasn't being accused of being distasteful, he was just called "one special idiot".

Generally people might agree it is distasteful, but some will take offense and some won't (Drifter clearly did), some will still see the humour, and some won't. That's all subjective.

Just as the one making the joke can't expect it will be accepted by everyone, the one taking offense can't expect everyone to be offended. Hell I make off colour jokes all the time, I try to keep them offline, but I sometimes get too tempted as well e.g.

Lets try again. My question was: "How can one show empathy with a distasteful comment such as that?" I agree we all differ and have different ideas about what is funny. Even if you choose to label it as "dark humor" it shows ZERO empathy.
 
Back in matric two guys fell through the bathroom ceiling, they were smoking the green stuff and high as fsck :D

Hahaha! Sounds familiar. We had a high as a kite buddy fall two stories from a balcony in Margate - onto a corrugated roof. He was ok, very relaxed, but when he jumped off to the parking lot below - he broke his ankle.
 
Back in the day a guy at our school was bunking in the school hall roof and when he was bust, tried to run away.
He fell through the roof in the gallery and landed on a chair.

He's lucky to be alive today

Right, gotcha, where we're missing each other is I never said you can show empathy while making a distasteful comment, I said you can empathize i.e. you can HAVE empathy while SHOWING something which is distasteful.

Perhaps it requires one to be a bit twisted, in which case I'm probably twisted in a similar fashion to Ninja'd. I think of the horror the parents are going through, I imagine how painful that must be and certainly don't wish such a fate on myself or anyone else. Despite that, I can still think of quite a few jokes given the context of the situation. The empathy and the humour are entirely divorced from each other during the thought process.

Now I can post something empathetic or something I think is funny and that's that, but it doesn't change the fact that I may have empathy if I post a distasteful joke or that I may have thought of a number of distasteful jokes despite posting something empathetic.

Way O/T though, I just don't believe there was anything malicious in this particular off colour joke, in fact I think there might very well be empathy despite it not being demonstrated.

Remember Eno bombs? I had a buddy who made one, put it in his pocket, and tried to climb over a wall. Still walks with a limp.
And another one is a highly respected lawyer now. His promising cricket career was cut short when he dove into the tide-pool at Margate (again) and broke both wrists.

All I can think about is how the parents would feel if, even if it is a massive if, they get to see callous comments such as that. I have a very good friend that lost a child and 13 years on she still hurts, even though she learned to manage it. But that aside, I think I might be thinking too much.
