We as consumers, who make up the captive market of Telkom are often complaining uselessly about our situation, being stuck with Telkom, their service, pricing and policies.
Now they're still hanging onto the local loop as long as they can.

Lets try speaking their language, money. Hit them where it hurts.
Boycott Telkom day
We can pledge not to use telkom to make calls on a 'tuesday' for example. Every tuesday, you don't make calls on telkom. Or whatever calls you can afford not to make.
If it catches on, telkom will see a dip on tuesdays.
People will talk about it. A lot of people in the country don't know that Telkom have been ripping us off.
With all their crap they have been pumping for the last few years "Telkom appreciates your business, thank you for choosing Telkom". While they CHARGE you, to hear that message. How many millions do they make a year from playing that message to people? As if we have a choice! They've corrupted and twisted the system for decades so that they're our only option. Its sick.

So, lets do something about it?

Im in. It would be my pleasure to fk telkom over. I would be willing to do more then 1 day a week, lets say 3 days a week without making a call from my telkom line and instead use my cell. Unfortunately, the sad reality of the situation is that I dont think you will have enough supporters and followers to go through with this and to hurt telkom. Almost every person living in South Africa rely's on Telkom.

Cool! Yeah could do a double T. Tuesday and Thursday hehe.
We need a manifesto to state what we are protesting, and what we want.
I would say "We are protesting against their monopoly, and we want the LLU"

It could catch on, like someone says "Hey, I'm on my cellphone at the moment, can you be quick" ... "You can call on our landline" ... "No, its Boycott Telkom Day" LOL

Not a bad idea at all! We will need a lot of participants in order for this to be effective. Everything else in this country seems to be resolved with striking so I don't see any reason why this wouldn't hurt Telkom! I'm IN!:D

Not going to work... some examples:

Just about every time you use your cell phone you indirectly end up paying Telkom via the interconnect rates.

Just about every time you swipe your bank card you pay a few cents to Telkom.

I.e. just about any time you send or receive any signal in SA, you end up paying something to Telkom.

So it will only work if you find a cave and stay there all day!!! :p

Telkom tuesday, yeah.
I pledge to not phone any fcking land line number. And yes I kicked their crap service and extortionate pricing out about 3 years ago already. If only everyone did the same then just maybe Telkom would catch a wake-up and learn that customer is KING.

No downloading/internet usage on Tuesdays. Don't see the Uncapped junkies doing that.

Good luck, I'll enjoy a less cluttered Internet network. MWEB will soon start to unshape on Tuesdays.

Data is a bit unrealistic to quantify, phone calls on the other hand will have a glaring dip, and obviously they will make money from the cell co's that use the network. wtf is wrong with ppl being so negative with doing something?? losers or just given up?

I don't think that boycotting Telkom for a day will be effective, for reasons mentioned above.

What I think could be effective is perhaps everyone boycotting the ADSL line rental.
What if one month everyone skipped it (regardless of if you use a phone line or not), then you never pay it. In other words we will all have R175 owing on out accounts forever.... it will really mess up the billing system.

I personally don't have much hassle with Telkom, in fact they quite surprised me last month when they credited my whole account as there was a bulk fault in our area for a week or so. After reporting the issue they even gave me an update without having to follow up. Other than the fault, in the last couple of years our ADSL has been rock solid - no complaints there. So other than the usual costing issues, I have received pretty good service from Telkom. Maybe I am in the minority but so far so good.

How many (non) calls are required to make them stop (pause? hesitate?) and take notice?

Now THAT would make a difference as it will impact on their projected monthly Cash Flow.

There are a plethora of reasons why this would not work. It's much the same as the supposed boycotting of certain petrol stations. It's pretty useless at the end of the day. Even if you did manage to achieve this throughout the whole of South Africa (which is not realistic), you'd only make a dent of 1/52 of Telkom's bottom line which is easily recoverable from their perspective. Even their admin department could recover that cost over the course of a year without affecting services. TAG had some better ideas. If you want to affect change, you need to think a little further out of the box...

i don't use my telkom line for calls at all, at work we use mtnns voip. so i'm on 24.7 boycott telkom day for months now and no difference yet.

I wish I could be part of this, but telkom is still laying cable to my complex. I only want to find out if I can get ADSL, because they have no DSLAM in the area, but I have to get a phone line first for them to check if ADSL will be supported. Telkom blows.

I don't think it'll work but I'm willing to douse myself in petrol and set myself alight outside their HQ if it will help.
